Historia
From the hosts of This Is Horror podcast comes a dark thriller of obsession, paranoia, and voyeurism. After relocating to a small coastal town, Brian discovers a hole that gazes into his neighbour’s bedroom. Every night she dances and he peeps. Same song, same time, same wild, and mesmerising dance. But soon, Brian suspects he’s not the only one watching, and she’s not the only one being watched.

Questionably question-based bad decisions...
Revisado: 02-03-22
(I received this audiobook gratis from the author and give my review honestly without compensation)
They’re Watching is a cavalcade of questions that lead to bad decisions that only raise more questions. There are elements that feel like this story may lead you down a very strange path, yet, everything remains frustratingly murky. And that lack of insight leads our main character into making further bad decisions. There is also a ton of anxiety, which I have mentioned in another review, Michael David Wilson is adept at writing. There will be no answers here, nothing that explains a down-to-earth cult or an otherworldly-empowered cult. This is a story of introducing new questions that seem to only compound previous ones. I know how frustrating not knowing can be, I can feel choosing to make a bad decision now for a possible righteous outcome, I sympathize with knowing someone else is right and deciding to mess around anyway; Michael and Bob have effectively written a believably anxious and selfish person avoiding trouble only to get deeper into it. Where I may not have enjoyed the ending, I was engaged throughout. I did want to see where it went, I just didn’t actually get to see.

Lingering questions...
Revisado: 02-03-22
(I received this audiobook gratis from the author and give my review honestly without compensation)
Michael David Wilson writes anxiety quite well. As someone with generalized anxiety, I can easily identify with the character's feelings and decisions, good and bad. That said, I also get frustrated with poor behavior that only seems to be present to further the plot. I had hoped for a more supernatural, weird-fiction element to unfold given the video's disturbing nature and the sender's near omniscient knowledge of the main character's online and real-world presence, but even as it unfolds, the ending leaves me disappointed. It is well written, and as I said, I identified solidly with the character, this just did not unfold in a way that I personally enjoyed. And I hate to spoil something in a public review beyond already revealing there is not an overt supernatural element to this story. It simply was not my cup of tea. It is not a bad story, I am rating it upon its quality and craft. If you enjoy unrelenting tension and nagging questions that beg you to keep coming back, you may find yourself enjoying The Girl in the Video.

Historia
John Perry did two things on his 75th birthday. First he visited his wife's grave. Then he joined the army. The good news is that humanity finally made it into interstellar space. The bad news is that planets fit to live on are scarce—and alien races willing to fight us for them are common. So: we fight. To defend Earth, and to stake our own claim to planetary real estate. Far from Earth, the war has been going on for decades: brutal, bloody, unyielding. Earth itself is a backwater.

It’s fine...
Revisado: 10-28-19
The concepts and themes are interesting enough, but it takes nearly two-thirds of the book to get to the really interesting stuff and even then, it doesn’t quite capitalize on the ideas presented. The performance can be a little over the top, but it’s not terrible. And that’s this book, the novel and audiobook are fine, not terrible.

As a writer
Revisado: 09-22-16
Elizabeth's own troubles, the troubles of others she discusses, both here and in her podcast Big Magic, are relevant to anyone with a desire to create something but just can't seem to get out of their own way. I know this audiobook form in particular will be a regular part of my listening repertoire, it takes time to climb mountains and learn magic. I'm glad to have her words there to urge me along.
