Historia
In this magisterial work, leading cultural critic Mary Eberstadt delivers a powerful new theory about the decline of religion in the Western world. The conventional wisdom is that the West first experienced religious decline, followed by the decline of the family. Eberstadt turns this standard account on its head. Marshalling an impressive array of research, Eberstadt shows that the reverse has also been true: the undermining of the family has further undermined Christianity itself.

Historia
Modern women - who use psychotherapeutic antidepressants at a rate never before seen in history - need liberating now more than ever. The truth is, feminists don't know what liberation is. They have led us into a very boring dead end. Once those fictionalized stereotypes are out of the way - whether they're things that make you gag or things you think look pretty fun - Christians can focus on real women. What did God make real women for?

Historia
In this new audiobook, Hall makes the airtight case that America's Founders were not deists; that they did not create a "godless" Constitution; that even Jefferson and Madison did not want a high wall separating church and state; that most Founders believed the government should encourage Christianity; and that they embraced a robust understanding of religious liberty for biblical and theological reasons. In addition, Hall explains why and how the Founders' views are absolutely relevant today.

Yes, it had a Christian founding. The book is relatively short since his thesis isn't hard to demonstrate.

Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

Excellent account of rising from Appalachia
Revisado: 04-22-17
My mom comes from Oakdale, Kentucky, a little burg outside of Jackson. So Jackson was the big town. Her family moved to north central Pennsylvania, shortly after World War 2, like J. D.'s family. So I have personal reasons to resonate with this book. It's an excellent account of who hillbillies are, and how they can change (as my mom's family did).

Historia
A definitive, deeply moving narrative, Bonhoeffer is a story of moral courage in the face of the monstrous evil that was Nazism. After discovering the fire of true faith in a Harlem church, Bonhoeffer returned to Germany and became one of the first to speak out against Hitler. As a double agent, he joined the plot to assassinate the Führer and was hanged in Flossenbürg concentration camp at age thirty-nine. Since his death, Bonhoeffer has grown to be one of the most fascinating, complex figures of the twentieth century.

Historia
In White Trash, Nancy Isenberg upends assumptions about America's supposedly class-free society. Poor whites were central to the rise of the Republican Party in the early 19th century, and the Civil War itself was fought over class issues nearly as much as it was fought over slavery. Reconstruction pitted poor white trash against newly freed slaves, which factored in the rise of eugenics. These poor were at the heart of New Deal reforms and LBJ's Great Society; they haunt us in reality TV shows like Here Comes Honey Boo Boo and Duck Dynasty.

False history
Revisado: 09-21-16
Terrible. She's not interested in history, but in advancing her narrative of how horrible America is. Couldn't stand it any longer. Her thesis has potential, but her only explanation was economic, as if Marxism of some sort were lurking in her mind throughout. Read Thomas Sowell instead; you'll get an account of all she hoped to present without the chip on her shoulder.

Plainly written, powerfully reasoned, and backed with a startling array of documented facts, Black Rednecks and White Liberals takes on the trendy intellectuals of our times as well as historic interpreters of American life.

Great review of race relations in America
Revisado: 09-03-16
The title is too cute, but the book is very substantial. He starts with a history of Rednecks and gives good support for the claim that many aspects of black life actually is from Europe, not Africa. And this is just the start. I plan to read this again very soon. Need to work this over.

The Gulag - a vast array of Soviet concentration camps that held millions of political and criminal prisoners - was a system of repression and punishment that terrorized the entire society, embodying the worst tendencies of Soviet communism. In this magisterial and acclaimed history, Anne Applebaum offers the first fully documented portrait of the Gulag, from its origins in the Russian Revolution, through its expansion under Stalin, to its collapse in the era of glasnost.

Sad account of history to which we are likely to return. In many, many ways, Applebaum told of the Gulag, the psychiatric hospitals, the White Sea canal, Lenin's role, etc. Very detailed, and very moving.

With his well-known idiosyncrasies and aphoristic style, Friedrich Nietzsche is always bracing and provocative, and temptingly easy to dip into. Michael Tanner's introduction to the philosopher's life and work examines the numerous ambiguities inherent in his writings and explodes many of the misconceptions that have grown in the hundred years since Nietzsche wrote "do not, above all, confound me with what I am not!"

Historia
In this explosive book, Francis Schaeffer shows why morality and freedom have crumbled in our society. He calls for a massive movement - in government, law, and all of life - to reestablish our Judeo-Christian foundation and turn the tide of moral decadence and loss of freedom. A Christian Manifesto is literally a call for Christians to change the course of history - by returning to biblical Truth and by allowing Christ to be Lord in all of life.

Loved it. Will listen again, perhaps annually. Prescient, given the America we now live in. Civil disobedience must be an option, otherwise the government has become a god, he observed.
