Historia
My husband is dead. I attended his funeral. I watched his casket be lowered six feet into the ground. (Actually, it may have been only five feet, but that still seems like more than enough.) And then we ate an array of finger sandwiches and deviled eggs and miniature beef wellingtons that cost more than my first car. My point is, Grant is gone. And so are all his many, many deep, dark secrets which I never really ever bothered to ask him about. He is never coming back.

Waste of time and money
Revisado: 10-23-24
I expected a lot better from McFadden. This is pointless, idiotic, and what's worse - totally not funny, so much so it's embarassing. Idiotic twists, cringeworthy playplays on words (LED? really? with this kind of stupidity one wonders how the heroine even manages to breathe on her own). Save you money - even the $5.90 was way to much for this bilge.

A diappointment
Revisado: 04-09-23
Not what I'vd grown to exowct from this writer. This one relies more on gore and gruesomeness than solid mistery. I barely managed to plod through.

Great read, superbly narrated
Revisado: 01-06-23
Ever wanted to even the score with all the leering, grabbing, drooling, mansplaining jerks every woman encounters on a daily basis? Then this one's for you. A bit of fantasy, a spot of Karma doing its bit, and lots of, well, not sure fun is the right term, considering the victins, but a very good read. And the narration takes it to the next level. I'm off to look up Ms. Miller's other works.

Historia
The tellers of Greek myths—historically men—have routinely sidelined the female characters. When they do take a larger role, women are often portrayed as monstrous, vengeful or just plain evil—like Pandora, the woman of eternal scorn and damnation whose curiosity is tasked with causing all the world’s suffering and wickedness when she opened that forbidden box. But, as Natalie Haynes reveals, in ancient Greek myths there was no box. It was a jar . . . which is far more likely to tip over.

If I could give it ten stars, I would
Revisado: 11-17-22
By far the best read in a long while - enlightening, scolarly, profound, and at the same time witty, humorous snd sometimes indignant or enraged, for all the right reasons. My first, and certainly not my last Natalie Haynes book.

Historia
Stepsister takes up where Cinderella's tale ends. We meet Isabelle, the younger of Cinderella's two stepsisters. Ella is considered beautiful; stepsister Isabelle is not. Isabelle is fearless, brave, and strong-willed. She fences better than any boy, and takes her stallion over jumps that grown men fear to attempt. It doesn't matter, though; these qualities are not valued in a girl. Others have determined what is beautiful, and Isabelle does not fit their definition.

Nicely written, despite a few anachronisms. Much improved by the superb narrator, whom I cannot praise highly enough.

Tolstoy certainly does not need my endorsement. But this translation, coupled with DavidHorowitch's exenplary narration, take it even further into the realm of the sublime.

Wonderful book
Revisado: 02-11-22
A masterfully drawn, spellbinding portrait of a woman's life in a turbulent period. One of the best books I've read in the past year. Even the harshest parts are written with such a delicate hand.

Historia
In the days of yore, he flew the skies and scorched angry mobs - now he hides from swamp tour boats and rises only with the greatest reluctance from his La-Z-Boy recliner. Laying low in the bayou, this once-magnificent fire breather has been reduced to lighting Marlboros with nose sparks, swilling Absolut in a Flashdance T-shirt, and binging Netflix in a fishing shack. For centuries, he struck fear in hearts far and wide as Wyvern, Lord Highfire of the Highfire Eyrie - now he goes by Vern.
