Historia
The night after her father's funeral, Claire meets Lucas in a bar. Lucas doesn't know it, but it's not a chance meeting. One thoughtless mistyped email has put him in the crosshairs of an extremely put-out serial killer. But before they make eye contact, before Claire lets him buy her a drink—even before she takes him home and carves him up into little pieces—something about that night is very wrong. Because someone is watching Claire. Someone who is about to discover her murderous little hobby.

More depressing than funny
Revisado: 04-12-25
I thought the content of this book (dementia, abuse) was depressing and didn’t feel like it was very comedic. The book had its lighter points but overall I wouldn’t call it a dark comedy

An unexpected favorite
Revisado: 09-29-24
I wasn’t into the story at first but got totally sucked in and loved this book. The authors accent threw me off at first because it doesn’t match where the characters live but I ended up really enjoying her narration.

Historia
At just 21, the age when most people are starting to drink (well, legally at least), Victoria James became the country’s youngest sommelier at a Michelin-starred restaurant. Even as Victoria was selling bottles worth hundreds and thousands of dollars during the day, passing sommelier certification exams with flying colors, and receiving distinction from all kinds of press, there were still groping patrons, bosses who abused their role and status, and a trip to the hospital emergency room.

This book contains a very important message and Victoria James is brave for telling it. I do want to warn future readers there is sexual assault content as part of her story.

Historia
On July 1, 1959, at Ypsilanti State Hospital in Michigan, the social psychologist Milton Rokeach brought together three paranoid schizophrenics: Clyde Benson, an elderly farmer and alcoholic; Joseph Cassel, a failed writer who was institutionalized after increasingly violent behavior toward his family; and Leon Gabor, a college dropout and veteran of World War II. The men had one thing in common: each believed himself to be Jesus Christ.

Remarkably unethical
Revisado: 06-18-24
An interesting book in basic idea and a look into mental health care in the past, though I’m not sure I can call it care since it doesn’t seem the patients received any actual treatment. The study was pretty wildly unethical but I know a lot of studies at the time were. It was still worth a listen

Historia
Jacob Tomsky has worked in hotels for more than a decade, doing everything from valet parking to manning the front desk. He's checked you in, checked you out, separated your white panties from the white bed sheets, parked your car, tasted your room service, cleaned your toilet, denied you a late check out, given you a wake-up call, eaten M&Ms out of your mini-bar, laughed at your jokes, and taken your money. And in Heads in Beds, he pulls back the curtain on the hospitality business.

Did not finish
Revisado: 11-03-23
I only got about an hour and a half into the book before I had to quit. I was already somewhat on edge with the awkward imitations of black people speaking, then encountered the story about the Japanese couple in which the author spoke in a racist sounding voice when quoting what they supposedly said. There’s also crass sexual language. No thanks!

This book really drew me in, I listened to it in one day. The only thing I wish I had been aware of was the content including rape and child sex abuse. I typically avoid content like this. Leaving this info for others to decide if they want to listen or not

Historia
The tranquility of a luxury cruise along the Nile was shattered by the discovery that Linnet Ridgeway had been shot through the head. She was young, stylish, and beautiful. A girl who had everything...until she lost her life. Hercule Poirot recalled an earlier outburst by a fellow passenger: “I’d like to put my dear little pistol against her head and just press the trigger.” Yet under the searing heat of the Egyptian sun, nothing is ever quite what it seems.

Taking issue with parts including the locals
Revisado: 12-12-21
Overall this story is good, however I have been cringing throughout the book at the frankly racist sounding voices done for the local people. While I understand this must be in part due to the way Christie wrote what they said, the narration of their voices makes it much worse. It also bothers me how the characters are so irritated with the people that live in the country they chose to visit. I get that this book was written in a different time, but it’s still disappointing!

A signature twist
Revisado: 08-25-20
I really enjoyed this audiobook. Every Liane Moriarty book has a great twist I don’t anticipate and this was no different. I liked the setting of the book and also how everything was wrapped up. I also sometimes get annoyed by books jumping between the point of view of different characters but I actually enjoyed it in this story.

Historia
Beloved author Elizabeth Gilbert returns to fiction with a unique love story set in the New York City theater world during the 1940s. Told from the perspective of an older woman as she looks back on her youth with both pleasure and regret (but mostly pleasure), City of Girls explores themes of female sexuality and promiscuity, as well as the idiosyncrasies of true love. In 1940, nineteen-year-old Vivian Morris has just been kicked out of Vassar College, owing to her lackluster freshman-year performance.

Review of City of Girls

There was a lot more to this book than I expected, but I really enjoyed it. I ended up “binge” listening to a lot of the later parts of the book. I thought the narrator really helped bring the characters to life.
