Exciting and Dramatic
Revisado: 08-15-22
This story certainly does not deserve a 1-star rating. To account for the one review with a 1 star at the time of this writing, I suspect the reader may have had some qualms about the ending sentence...
1st half of the story has a domineering hero sort and a coquettish woman kind of romance. Inchbald's theater background shines through because there is no end to the dramatics and fuss. You'd think it'd go down to the typical ending but prepare to be surprised. The author loves to switch the whole situation around with a time skip. The characters are written with some amount of complexity but don't expect any deep deep dives.
Juliet Stevenson's narration is lovely as usual. In fact, she was the reason I picked up this read. I don't regret it.

The Why of War chronicles 15 years of my US cavalry scout career. From introduction to conclusion, from stroke to mass shootings, this story is guaranteed to be seared into your memory. Now that the story has been written and has flowed to its truth, I realize it encompasses so much more than a question or a collection of memories. It serves as a bullhorn for other veterans to use to tell their stories. I am confident, I wasn't the only one asking why we invaded Iraq while I was there. Civilian listeners may gain a better understanding when thanking a veteran for their service.

Personal experience of war
Revisado: 09-07-19
While I didn’t agree with the author on a number of perspectives, it in no way undermined the importance of an experience. I couldn’t tell if it was the writing or the narration, but it felt so disjointed I didn't get the sense of an overarching narrative. I feel like the narrator and the author have two different voices while made the story seem disconnected.

Historia
Yazid Valerion is alone with the truth, but his warnings fall on deaf ears. Eons ago, the Dead God promised a world of ash, and the time of that prophecy is now at hand. His only hope is to cross the sea with his few followers in search of ancient enemies, the Meites, and pray he can sway them to his cause. But the Meites are no mere mortals; they are powerful sorcerers prone to outbursts of destructive terror. Even if he can find them, there's no guarantee they won't slaughter him and his men upon first sight.

Better than expected!

A squabbling never ending vendetta like story. God I hated Kariana but I have to commend the political problems, the toxicity of her relationships, and the complexity of her drug abuses. Overall, its a unique story and I enjoyed listening to this. The ten hours blazed through like nothing. In the beginning it was hard to keep track of all the numerous point of views and characters, but it was easy to get familiarized about 20 percent into the story. Would recommend.

Historia
Amaford, a city of prosperity and trade. Merchants flock to it, sailors swear by it, but the people curse its name. For a city of such stature, its dark side runs to its core. Its people struggle to survive the harsh conditions that come with its popularity. More so, the people of its Bridge Districts, or better known as the slums. This is where we find our story, a story covered in filth and poverty.

Great short story

Love the main character, and the colorful world of inhabitants! The narrator really brought the talkative Jimmy alive, with all the cursing you can wish for. Hoping for a sequel soon.

Historia
Salem, Massachusetts, was home to one of the most infamous periods in American history. False witches were burned at the stake while actual witches stood by and watched in reverie. The flames scratched the skies with horrendous height as the heart of man darkened. At least that's how the story goes. Sparrow is a teen who loves everything vintage. Jason is her best friend who relies on their friendship as a steady constant in his life.

If only the narrator wasn't so flat in her reading. Without the change in POV with each chapter I wouldn't be able to tell the characters apart!

Story great, narrator not so much
Revisado: 06-20-19
I enjoyed the story but the narrator often sounds like a robot (and making a bunch of jump cut like pauses). The narration flowed smoothly with the dialogue parts - he doesn't sound robotic! Despite my lack of familiarity with the West Virginian accent I'm assuming, I think he nailed it spot on. With the other parts, however, I had trouble getting immersed in the story from time to time because of all the awkward pauses and neutral tone.
