Historia
Dana Potowski is a restaurant critic and food writer and a longtime member of a progressive Unitarian Universalist congregation in Southern California. Just as she’s finishing the book tour for her latest bestseller, Dana is asked to join the church search committee for a new minister. Under pressure to find her next book idea, she agrees, and resolves to secretly pen a memoir, with recipes, about the experience. That memoir, Search, follows the travails of the committee and their candidates—and becomes its own media sensation.

Startlingly similar
Revisado: 02-16-23
This memoir is similar to my experiences being on a church board who attempted a search without the unusual food, which in retrospect could have added a fun element.
It’s a good read or listen. And so rewarding to realize churches are similar in their human characters.

Gifted author
Revisado: 02-11-23
This book is beautifully written. Though the story is haunting. A tragic tale in American history, one that should humble us all for many reasons. Civil Townsend, primary character, is filled with determination, her determination sets a family on a journey ending in changes to the treatment of poor, uneducated women and female children in the 1970’s. The author uses beautiful words to tell a sad, tragic tale. Highly recommended.

Delightful story
Revisado: 12-21-22
Liked everything! Reminds me of The Calendar Girls a little bit. The story was sweet, more rolling highs and lows versus high peaks and extreme valleys. The narrator has a soft lilting Irish voice. Felt like we were in the west of Ireland. With mostly kind characters, who are fully developed, except for those supporting roles that set the stage for more kindness and care. Heartwarming, not sappy. Well written, audiobook well produced, worth one’s time and attention.

Kendra comes to San Francisco, a sleepy town of 900 people, because her stepfather, an army colonel, is charged with overseeing its defenses during the Mexican War. Marny arrives from Honolulu to set up a gambling hall. Neither expects to be swept up in one of history's greatest adventures, which begins when tiny flakes of gold are discovered in the California hills. Both young women follow their dreams into the mining camps and back to a rapidly growing San Francisco.

Entertains, Enlightening story
Revisado: 07-26-20
I love this book, read it many years ago, just reread because the story is about resilience. Something I need now more than ever. We need to be reminded how strong our spirit is how resilient we are. In my 68 years I’ve never felt so worn out by the world. This story lifts my heart and reminds me of the perils those who came before us suffered.
Gwen Bristow was an excellent story teller, she paints a clear picture throughout, you can see the scenes in your head, hear the bells tolling from the San Francisco fires, see the rain, mud, etc. and be reminded that after peril comes growth, understanding, compassion and new beginnings. A wonderful historical depiction of those gold rush days that lends HOPE.
