This Book Changed My Entire Perspective

Talented narrator...unclear message

Let me start by saying that the narrator of the story was absolutely phenomenal. Her character voices were easy to differentiate and very well performed—probably the best that I have heard out of maybe 50 audiobooks so far. I liked how the story ended, but I couldn’t help but wish there was more of a clear message for white people on how to appropriately and effectively contribute to the movement. The only white character that is excepted into the black community is one who embraces aspects of black culture that may not be as familiar to all white people who still want to fight for equality. Thus, the message that I take away as a white adult reader is that the only way to be excepted is to be intimately familiar with black culture. I’m sure that was not the intention of the author (and it’s certainly not the responsibility of an author to cater to every potential reader), just a result of only really focusing on two primary white characters, one of whom was clearly racist and the other was the one I mentioned above. Otherwise the story was entertaining and inspiring.
