Historia
Young playwright Melina Green has just written a new work inspired by the life of her Elizabethan ancestor Emilia Bassano. But seeing it performed is unlikely, in a theater world where the playing field isn’t level for women. As Melina wonders if she dares risk failure again, her best friend takes the decision out of her hands and submits the play to a festival under a male pseudonym.

The reality of nurses
Revisado: 02-20-24
This book touched me in a way no book has. I am an RN and worked on a Drug and Alcohol Unit where I heard many stories of loss and trauma. It was so easy to put myself in Frankie's shoes, with a strong desire to help others physically and emotionally. The author's ability to capture "the big picture" with detail made it all feel real. I could not stop listening. I highly recommend this book.

Historia
Olivia McAfee knows what it feels like to start over. Her picture-perfect life—living in Boston, married to a brilliant cardiothoracic surgeon, raising their beautiful son, Asher—was upended when her husband revealed a darker side. She never imagined that she would end up back in her sleepy New Hampshire hometown, living in the house she grew up in and taking over her father’s beekeeping business. Lily Campanello is familiar with do-overs, too. When she and her mom relocate to Adams, New Hampshire, for her final year of high school, they both hope it will be a fresh start.

all written and performed in a "I can't put this book down" way. The best of all the books (so far) that I have read that are authored by Jody Piccoult, and I have read several. Love her collaboration on this one too. She always amazes me with her in-depth knowledge on subject of each book. Highly recommend this book.

In the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election, Donald Trump and many around him, including certain other elected Republican officials, intentionally breached their oath to the Constitution: they ignored the rulings of dozens of courts, plotted to overturn a lawful election, and provoked a violent attack on our Capitol.

An intricate tale of love, haunting memories, and renewal, Second Glance begins in current-day Vermont, where an old man puts a piece of land up for sale and unintentionally raises protest from the local Abenaki Indian tribe, who insist it's a burial ground. When odd, supernatural events plague the town of Comtosook, a ghost hunter is hired by the developer to help convince the residents that there's nothing spiritual about the property.

Disappointed
Revisado: 12-04-23
As much as I like this author, I was disappointed with this audiobook. And as talented as the narrator undoubtedly is, the narration sounded like an old man no matter which character he was portraying. it was disconcerting, hard to stay with this story.

Jodi Picoult has the wonderful ability to write about "difficult to discuss" issues by engaging cognitive and emotional aspects of humanness from many viewpoints. This is the second book of hers I've read and I'm intending to read more.

Historia
Indian American journalist Smita has returned to India to cover a story, but reluctantly: long ago she and her family left the country with no intention of ever coming back. As she follows the case of Meena—a Hindu woman attacked by members of her own village and her own family for marrying a Muslim man—Smita comes face to face with a society where tradition carries more weight than one’s own heart, and a story that threatens to unearth the painful secrets of Smita’s own past.

Historia
In this searing novel, Kathrine Kressmann Taylor brings vividly to life the insidious spread of Nazism through a series of letters between Max, a Jewish art dealer in San Francisco, and Martin, his friend and former business partner who has returned to Germany in 1932, just as Hitler is coming to power. A powerful and eloquent tale about the consequences of a friendship - and society - poisoned by extremism, Address Unknown remains hauntingly and painfully relevant today.

Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Emotional but Worth It
Revisado: 01-31-23
It was difficult to get through the endless-seeming "bad luck" of the main character and his environment(s). It also took awhile for me to accustom myself to the performer who improved his presentation as he went.
Having worked as a nurse in a substance abuse hospital/rehab in the south, I knew Kingsolver had done her homework and/or had witnessed the sadness of a cycle of drugs, poverty, and an environment which contribute to the very difficult work of getting and staying sober.
Congratulations to the author on a job well done. I look forward to listening to more of her books.
