Corny and predictable except for the "mystery" which was simply ridiculous. Sorry, not for me...

Lightweight but charming story that was a humorous relief from the last couple books that took themselves too seriously. The protagonist is a divorced guy who feels like a big loser until he meets a mysterious young woman when he returns home to visit his elderly grandpa and right wing talk show host mom.

The spunky heroine is true and good and lives happily ever after, the screwed up brother screws up and doesn't. The author uses too many unnecessary metaphors and similes and the narrator's voice annoyed me.

Wow! What a life story -- from abject poverty, extreme religious fundamentalism, paranoid mentally ill abusive family members including parents, never going to doctors or attending school, instead subjected to hard and dangerous child labor and then she teaches herself to read, do math and eventually goes to Harvard and Oxford and gets a PhD! Brilliant writing and amazing story.

I really enjoyed this beautifully narrated audio book. The story is told through the viewpoints of two women: one who as as a child during the depression, lived on a shanty boat on a river in Tennessee in poverty (but without knowing it because of the love of her family) and a young lawyer raised by a wealthy, upper class, political southern family. There is mystery, politics, family secrets, a little romance and wonderfully rich images of the river life and a bleak look into the life of children who were taken and adopted out/sold by the terrible owner of the Tennessee Children's Home--a scandal that was only recently discovered and that the book is based on.

Interesting book that connects 3 sets of disparate characters (eventually). I was a little disappointed in the ending which didn’t quite resolve everything. I guess I wanted more, wanted to see what would happen to the characters in the future, which I guess means it was a good book. Definitely kept my attention while I was listening to it.

Really fun mystery...a bit preachy about the evils of American culture from a Norwegian perspective but since I agree with the assessment, that part was snarky fun and so were the characters and plot.

Pointless though fairly engaging continuation of the current trend in unreliable narrator books about women on the edge. Just ok, reasonable amount of suspense but unbelievable storyline, especially the ending.

This was an enjoyable audiobook, well-narrated and the story was satisfying. I never saw it listed as YA but I’m thinking it must be in that category, one that I don’t normally read. It tackles racism, bullying and police racism/shooting, ghetto life, and issues of class and white privilege, interracial dating, gangs, drugs but because of the young African American woman’s spirit and strength never becomes maudlin or depressing.
