Historia
These Are the Voyages - The Original Series, Season One , at 28 hours, is perhaps the most ambitious audiobook undertaken. Narrated by Vic Mignogna (Executive Producer and Captain Kirk in the web-series Star Trek Continues), this "audio play" documents the creation of the Star Trek TV series and production of its two pilot films and the 28 episodes from its formative first season (1966-67). This unparalleled production boasts a cast of nearly 100, including the voices of many of those who helped make the first Star Trek series.

Marc Cushman and Susan Osborn did an amazing job
Revisado: 05-17-24
This is one of those titles that you think can't be at all interesting, but most of this book was written by looking through Roddenberry's papers, scripts and memos to/from NBC during the course of season 1.
As such, it's a superb record of the creation of Trek, a little bit about the battles with Desilu studios, with NBC execs, and mostly with well-known SciFi authors who hadn't yet mastered the art of writing TV scripts.
There's a lot of personal details about Shatner (surprise, Shatner was well like by the other actors, the guest stars, and the directors) A fair bit about Nimoy and how all the actors were selected.
If you're a fan of TOS, you'll enjoy this book, The reader did a superb job in my opinion. I hope they come out with Volume 2 & 3.

Historia
From the Arthur C. Clarke award-winning author of Children of Time, this third and final novel in an extraordinary space opera trilogy depicts humanity on the brink of extinction—and reveals how one man's discovery will save or destroy us all. Lords of Uncreation is the final high-octane installment in Adrian Tchaikovsky's Final Architecture space opera trilogy.

Interesting, but a lot of filler
Revisado: 10-14-23
I have to admit, I'm not a fan of the curse of the trilogy in SF, but economically it makes sense. The downside is that stories often meander, with a lot of chapters that seem thrown in just to fill out the required number of words for a book.
This one has the bones of a great story, it has to do with the hidden truth behind the entire universe, which is a pretty interesting concept, and I suppose it hooked me into buying all three books.
But the best word I can think of to describe these books is "baroque", there are way too many characters, too many chapters that don't drive the plot forward, and you find yourself wondering if you can even get through it. And the end is, well, a bit of a letdown.
I don't want you to discourage anyone from buying this book. The writing is thoughtful, the plot is kind of mind-blowing, and the narrator, Sophie Aldred, is amazing at voicing the many and varied characters. I gave it two stars because two star is "okay".
But I do long for the days when an author was willing to tell a complex tale in a single book.

Book is engaging even though meant for teens
Revisado: 05-16-23
I'm a Peter Hamilton fan, his books push the limits in terms of anticipating future societal trends, thoughtful in terms of the science, and in general, he continues in the traditions from the golden age of science fiction.
This book is obviously meant for young teens, and in particular young women. The story through the first two books is basically a stripped down version of his typical books, with a much simpler plot, and fewer characters. It is charming, and I appreciate that he's trying to get more young people into science fiction, featuring a typical young woman thrust into the role of hero.
All that said, this final book is the weakest of the trilogy and it feels a little filled out to meet a minimum page commitment. However, I did enjoy it anyway. My only real complaint is that the characters keep using the phrase "Sweet Captain" as a bit of an exclamation phrase which got annoying after two books, but that aside, the writing is tidy and to the point.
As to my ratings, The only books I give five stars to are literary classics with a genre. If a book is good, it gets three stars. So I'd rate this one as a decent ending to a story.

Historia
Our universe has been growing for nearly 14 billion years. But almost everything about it, from the elements that forged stars, planets, and lifeforms, to the fundamental forces of physics, can be traced back to what happened in just the first three minutes of its existence. In this book, Nobel Laureate Steven Weinberg describes in wonderful detail what happened in these first three minutes.

Interesting, but a bit dated.... weird glitches
Revisado: 05-03-23
I enjoyed this, but book is somewhat dated considering the advances of understanding in particle physics. over the past few decades.
But the really odd part is that within chapters, this book repeats small sections with chapters, making it a bit annoying to listen to. It feels like Audible or the publisher need to fix this file to get rid of these repeating sections.

Revisado: 03-22-23
I'd read the book many years ago, and I did enjoy this "Audioplay", but the book seemed much shortened in Ender's training as well as the ending is different than I remembered.
Aside from that, it was performed competently, I listened to it fairly quickly, so I did enjoy it. It's a painless introduction to the novel for those who don't have the time to sit down and read it.

What drives the Man Without Fear? Matt Murdock was raised by a single father, an over-the-hill prizefighter with one last chance to make good - a chance that cost him his life. Taunted and tormented by other children, Matt's life was irrevocably altered after he was blinded by radioactive materials while saving the life of an old man. The payoff? An unbreakable will and a keen intelligence, helping focus the super-senses with which he was blessed during the accident. His story is one of love, pain, disappointment, and strength.

The performance better than the story
Revisado: 03-07-22
It's a fun listen, the special effects are pretty good, and a large cast make this audiobook a fun listen. If you think of this as an old-fashioned radio drama, you'll understand it better. It's the origin story of Daredevil. I never read the comics, so I can't comment if it's true to the original story.
I consider three stars to be pretty good for an audiobook [to get to 5 stars it has a classic book]. Not life changing, not thought provoking, but entertaining.

Ex-military policeman Jack Reacher is a drifter. He’s just passing through Margrave, Georgia, and in less than an hour, he’s arrested for murder. Not much of a welcome. All Reacher knows is that he didn’t kill anybody. At least not here. Not lately. But he doesn’t stand a chance of convincing anyone. Not in Margrave, Georgia. Not a chance in hell.

Starts off with a bang, but...
Revisado: 02-06-22
This story starts off pretty strong, you'll love the first third. It sags in the middle, a lot of going from place to place that could have been omitted, but finishes much stronger. It would have benefited from some editing, but overall it was very enjoyable. Part action, part mystery, and a good introduction to the series.

Historia
For Meredith Gale, ending her life seems like her only choice, and that choice is the reason she’s dangling by her fingertips from a bridge high above the freezing water of the San Francisco Bay. But someone or some thing has other plans for Meredith, and as her fingers slip from the cold steel of the bridge, a disembodied voice asks her a simple question: “Candidate 13: Do you wish to be saved?” Realizing her mistake too late, Meredith screams “Yes!” and instantly finds herself transported to a mysterious island, alongside hundreds of other Candidates like her.

Slow, derivative and not very compelling
Revisado: 01-11-21
This books starts out in an interesting way with the suicide attempt of what you learn is the book's protagonist. It's all downhill after that.
Unfortunately, what happens after the suicide attempt drags on for about 4 hours until you learn the book is a modern take on the book "To Your Scattered Bodies Go" by Philip José Farmer from about 40 years ago.
In an attempt to make the protagonist an "every person" he leaves the hero slow-minded and flat. She has no particular skill (except for some apparently magical power) and is unfortunately surrounded by characters even less interesting than her.
The book ends suddenly, and you get the feeling that had the author had moved the first 3/4's of the book along, this could have been a single book.
The narrator, Kate Reading does her best to make this all interesting, but the characters are so dull she can't even fix this.
If you want a similar story, done much better, purchase the book "To Your Scattered Bodies Go" from Audible and enjoy the original.

Historia
Following his mission on Cappa, Colonel Carl Butler returns to a mixed reception. To some, he is a do-or-die war hero. To the other half of the galaxy, he’s a pariah. Forced into retirement, he has resettled on Talca Four where he’s now Deputy VP of Corporate Security, protecting a high-tech military company on the corporate battlefield - at least, that’s what the job description says. Really, he’s just there to impress clients and investors. It’s all relatively low risk - until he’s entrusted with new orders.

Characters in the story don't act logically
Revisado: 10-29-20
As a page turner (virtual) it's an okay book. But the charm and the suspense of the first book, Planetside, isn't there. The protagonist, Colonel Butler, seems content to mostly bumble his way along, and the villains make up for it by acting even worse. The whole thing just feels like a stretch. About halfway through this relatively short book, I considered just bailing, but the end added enough drama that I didn't feel I wasted my time. I see there's a third, book, I don't think I'll consider it. If ypu absolutely loved the Butler in the first book, you'll probably love this one too, but this story is clearly a notch below the first one.

Decent, but not his best
Revisado: 10-04-19
The premise of this story is story is pretty good; the author brings in some new concepts in his universe, he explains characters/concepts he's brought in previously in other stories, all the familiar elements are there.
It starts off with a bang, the characters are introduced, some really great story elements are trotted out to create the elements of an interesting story. But the middle of this story just drags. There's a lot of potential there, but ultimately the author fell into a pattern of sending characters bouncing around the galaxy for interesting vignettes that have no bearing on the overall story.
I finished, but it felt like a chore. Apparently this is the first of three parts. The author has earned enough credit that I'll try to continue to the next part.
