Historia
Hannah Arendt was a polarizing cultural theorist—extolled by her peers as a visionary and berated by her critics as a poseur and a fraud. Born in Prussia to assimilated Jewish parents, she escaped from Hitler’s Germany in 1933. Arendt is now best remembered for the storm of controversy that surrounded her 1963 New Yorker series on the trial of Adolf Eichmann, a kidnapped Nazi war criminal. In this comprehensive biography, Anne C. Heller tracks the source of Arendt’s contradictions and achievements to her sense of being a “conscious pariah”.

Interesting and well written, kept my attention through every second. If anything I felt it was too short. Was disappointed when it finished.

Finally a guide that addresses the real issue: us
Revisado: 04-09-23
I have read so many different books on child rearing and upbringing, all of them essentially telling us parents that we just need to be patient. Patient towards our children, time, and practically everything else. The question has always remained with me: But how can I be patient? What if I'm just not a patient type of person? Until now. Thank you for finally answering the real question and helping parents address the main challenge in parenting: dealing with ourselves, our fears and insecurities and our own judgments of ourselves. Don't think I'll need to read another book on parenting. I may, however, re-read this one regularly from now on. Thank you.

Historia
Humans are, in in fundamental ways, a migratory species, more so than any other land mammal. Migration is one of the most toxically controversial subjects of our day, but it is not only an issue of our age. Migrants are expected to assimilate and encouraged to remain distinctive; to defend their heritage and adopt a new one. They are sub-human and super-human; romanticised and castigated, admired and abhorred. Migrants tells us that this is not a new narrative; this is the history of migration, which is part of everybody's backstory.

Well structured and full of substance
Revisado: 04-09-23
I ordered the book in advance and was not disappointed. The story is well structured and informative, and gives great context to people's intentions, opinions and experiences, rather than just reciting dates and places and names of rulers, which is common in historical overviews. The author shows deep understanding and respect for humans, wherever they come from and/or are going. A true pleasure read. Gives hope for humanity. The narrator does a fine job as well.

Historia
A country both admired and feared, Germany has been the epicenter of world events time and again: the Reformation, both World Wars, the fall of the Berlin Wall. It did not emerge as a modern nation until 1871 - yet today, Germany is the world's fourth-largest economy and a standard-bearer of liberal democracy.

Too many battles. Too little substance.
Revisado: 04-09-23
Like many historians, the author falls into the pitfall of reciting dates and places of battles and names of battlers, without any attempt for a relation to the experience, opinions and lives of the people who form the nation(s). Uninteresting and quite difficult to follow for this reason.

Uninteresting
Revisado: 12-20-22
After reading The Chancellor, this book comes off as superficial and uninteresting. It lacks insight into the personality of Merkel, which is essential to understanding her politics and actions. It's not bad as a historical overview in itself but loses in comparison to Kati Marton's rendition of the story.

Historia
Philosophy begins with questions about the nature of reality and how we should live. These were the concerns of Socrates, who spent his days in the ancient Athenian marketplace asking awkward questions, disconcerting the people he met by showing them how little they genuinely understood. This engaging book introduces the great thinkers in Western philosophy and explores their most compelling ideas about the world and how best to live in it.

The perfect listening if you want to brush up on your philosophy knowledge. Short chapters and all the basics. The narrator is also amazing, keeps you interested and makes you feel like he's telling you a story, not just reading from a book. I'm keeping it even though I finished it.

Historia
In It's Dangerous to Believe, Mary Eberstadt documents how people of faith - especially Christians who adhere to traditional religious beliefs - face widespread discrimination in today's increasingly secular society. Eberstadt details how recent laws, court decisions, and intimidation on campuses and elsewhere threaten believers who fear losing their jobs, their communities, and their basic freedoms solely because of their convictions.

Not about Freedom of Religion
Revisado: 01-29-19
I am doing research on Freedom of Religion in Europe vs. the United States and found the book while searching for literature on the challenges faced by the United States in this regard at the moment, as they seem to be quite different from those in Europe.
The book was a huge disappointment. It is in fact not so much about Freedom of Religion, but rather a semi-hysterical 5-hour rant about the alleged threats of secularism - and what the author calls "the sexual revolution" - to Christian values. The author doesn't seem to see the contradiction in calling secularism a religion - ironically using the word "religion" as something disgraceful in that context - and at the same time claiming that it is threatening Freedom of Religion.
The author's choice of words is often overly biased which makes it difficult to filter out the possibly interesting or important points the author could be making (e.g. regarding Freedom of Expression), which was particularly disappointing.
Despite the low scientific or factual value of the book it's sort of a fun listening. It's quite dramatic in it's descriptions of the horrors of "the secular religion" and it's advocates, and was therefore fun enough for me to finish it without too much effort. The performance is entertainingly dramatic with the appropriate expression of disgust in the pronunciation of certain words and telling of certain anecdotes which are clearly considered very shocking by the reader as well as the author.
I cannot, however, recommend this book to anyone who is seriously interested in the issues of Freedom of Religion and it's enemies. The title is therefore misleading.
