Historia
An exuberant and insightful work of popular history of how streets got their names, houses their numbers, and what it reveals about class, race, power, and identity. When most people think about street addresses, if they think of them at all, it is in their capacity to ensure that the postman can deliver mail or a traveler won’t get lost. But street addresses were not invented to help you find your way; they were created to find you. In many parts of the world, your address can reveal your race and class.

What does your address mean to you?
Revisado: 02-19-22
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The author takes a seemingly simple idea - reason for addressing - and develops it in an amazingly global way, drawing examples from all over the world. This was a very interesting read. I will never again underestimate the value of an address - some used for good and others more so for social and financial gains.

Drawing upon 25 years of experience representing Black youth in Washington, DC’s juvenile courts, Kristin Henning confronts America’s irrational, manufactured fears of these young people and makes a powerfully compelling case that the crisis in racist American policing begins with its relationship to Black children.

Highly recommend this book for all mothers, grandmothers, teachers and EVERY person who interacts with children and especially male of color! We must educate ourselves on the facts so we can be better, do better, and ADVOCATE for equitable treatment of our children. We can no longer sit on the sidelines and lose our eyes to the injustices and negative life altering circumstances with which boys of color are faced. We must advocate for educational and juvenile justices reform. We need more mental health professionals to expert provide interventions rather than arresting children and relegating them to the horrors of the juvenile justice system, and worse, the adult criminal system!

“Mine” is one of the first words babies learn, and by the time we grow up, the idea of ownership seems natural, whether we are buying a cup of coffee or a house. But who controls the space behind your airplane seat: you, reclining, or the squished laptop user behind you? Why is plagiarism wrong, but it’s okay to knock off a recipe or a dress design? And after a snowstorm, why does a chair in the street hold your parking space in Chicago, while in New York you lose both the space and the chair?

Revisado: 01-08-22
This was a very interesting dive into the concept of ownership - a concept that I had not before felt the need to fully understand snd/or investigate. What are the rules of ownership and what can we really own in this digital age were questions that emerged for me from the text. Is ownership always legally determined? Is there room for ethical principles to also prevail? These are questions with which I still grapple I highly recommend this book!

Mediocre investigates the real costs of this phenomenon in order to imagine a new white male identity, one free from racism and sexism.

Revisado: 10-30-21
This is a very timely, well researched and excellently written text that everyone needs to read. It takes a historical review of American history and the tenets of systemic white male privilege, especially in presidential leadership and provides clarity and an understanding of the motivation behind the leadership that is intentionally and systematically built int the American fabric. This is a brilliant book that I will read again to ensure I did not miss essential truths as I greedily gobbled it up on the first read!

Revisado: 10-13-21
This book opened my eyes to the devastating and incredible experiences that many Black women endure daily in corporate America. Climbing the corporate ladder is fraught with many obstacles - some blatant and most shrouded in coded language and behavior. Be prepared to experience anger and frustration and then do some self reflection in an effort to support positive change.

Have you ever wondered "Why did I do that?" or "Why can't I just control my behavior?" Others may judge our reactions and think, "What's wrong with that person?" When questioning our emotions, it's easy to place the blame on ourselves; holding ourselves and those around us to an impossible standard. It's time we started asking a different question. Through deeply personal conversations, Oprah Winfrey and renowned brain and trauma expert Dr. Bruce Perry offer a groundbreaking and profound shift from asking “What’s wrong with you?” to “What happened to you?”

Beginning in the predawn hours of airports in the Northeast, we meet the ticket agents who unknowingly usher terrorists onto their flights, and the flight attendants inside the hijacked planes. In New York City, first responders confront a scene of unimaginable horror at the Twin Towers. From a secret bunker underneath the White House, officials watch for incoming planes on radar. Aboard the small number of unarmed fighter jets in the air, pilots make a pact to fly into a hijacked airliner if necessary to bring it down.

This is an excellent book that artfully and sensitively chronicles the details of the 9/11 attack. Hearing the voices of those who served and those who survived, recounting their experiences was very sobering. Reading this book during the withdrawal from Afghanistan makes it even more valuable and reminds us of America’s commitment to democracy.

In this brilliant book, Isabel Wilkerson gives us a masterful portrait of an unseen phenomenon in America as she explores, through an immersive, deeply researched narrative and stories about real people, how America today and throughout its history has been shaped by a hidden caste system, a rigid hierarchy of human rankings. Beautifully written, original, and revealing, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents is an eye-opening story of people and history, and a reexamination of what lies under the surface of ordinary lives and of American life today.
