Historia
This sprawling and often brutal novel, set in the rich farmlands of California's Salinas Valley, follows the intertwined destinies of two families - the Trasks and the Hamiltons - whose generations helplessly reenact the fall of Adam and Eve and the poisonous rivalry of Cain and Abel.

Excellent Narration! Excellent story!
Revisado: 01-14-23
I’ve listened to over a hundred novels. This narrator is among the best. So many characters, yet he is able to capture tone and mood. He is able to depict girl/woman voices without sounding like Mickey Mouse.
I can almost see facial expressions by the richness of Steinbeck’s brilliance.
By the time I was 25% into the book I felt like I knew 5-6 characters personally.

Historia
One winter evening a shoemaker finds a mysterious stranger naked and freezing by a shrine in his small village. The shoemaker rescues the man, and takes him home. Though the stranger won’t say where he came from, Simon invites him to work beside him, and stay with his family. As the story unfolds, the stranger transforms, and ultimately reveals an astonishing and deeply moving secret. Late in Tolstoy’s life, after he had written his great masterpieces War and Peace, and Anna Karenina, he underwent a spiritual transformation.

Spiritual Parable
Revisado: 12-24-20
The literature is classic Tolstoy. He weaves scriptural/spiritual truths in a story.
The narration is unlike I’ve ever heard in all the many audiobooks I’ve heard. The narrator reads slightly above a whisper and there is chimes/music going on in the background. The music is like the music you’d hear getting an oriental massage. Since the book was only an hour I put up with it. Be sure to listen to the sample- you may like it. The story and message far outweighs the narration.

Historia
Count Leo Nikolayevich Tolstoy (1828 - 1910), was a Russian writer who is regarded as one of the greatest authors of all time. Tolstoy’s short story The Candle is about peasants who want to kill their superintendent because he insists they plough a field on Easter Monday. The theme examines the biblical concept of turning the other cheek, and trusting God to sort out injustice, or taking things into one’s own hands.

Timely
Revisado: 11-18-20
This book expounds on scripture that transcends the current pandemic. However, he candidly addresses the “pink elephant” in the room that we all see, namely the pandemic and all of the frustration and uncertainty.
It gives a scriptural voice to what I’ve been feeling.

Best Narration I’ve ever heard
Revisado: 07-22-20
Without getting into my opinion of the story and literature, this is the best narration I’ve ever heard. I’ve listened to over 100 novels and this narrator has had the best annunciation and cadence.
It’s almost as read “by the author”...I feel like I knew the characters personally. The rich writing style of Tolstoy of course made that happen, but a narrator can detract from the story when not read with emotion and diction.
