Trippy, but the end is worth it
Revisado: 06-03-23
Very different than first 2 books in terms of scope and pacing for the first 3/4 of the book. The end made it all make sense though and it brought up interesting philosophical questions I'd never considered before (as always). Just as good aa the first 2 imo, just in a different way

Historia
Thousands of years ago, Earth's terraforming program took to the stars. On the world they called Nod, scientists discovered alien life - but it was their mission to overwrite it with the memory of Earth. Then humanity's great empire fell, and the program's decisions were lost to time. Aeons later, humanity and its new spider allies detected fragmentary radio signals between the stars. They dispatched an exploration vessel, hoping to find cousins from old Earth. But those ancient terraformers woke something on Nod better left undisturbed. And it's been waiting for them.

Just as good as Children of Time
Revisado: 04-30-23
Really love how the writer describes the perspective of something sentient, but not an animal. Super creative science fiction. Also, Kern is my favorite by the end. It's hilarious how she goes from asshole to "helpful" asshole and retains all of her annoying quirks while doing good.

Historia
The guru to the gurus at last shares his knowledge with the rest of us. Nobel laureate Daniel Kahneman's seminal studies in behavioral psychology, behavioral economics, and happiness studies have influenced numerous other authors, including Steven Pinker and Malcolm Gladwell. In Thinking, Fast and Slow, Kahneman at last offers his own, first book for the general public. It is a lucid and enlightening summary of his life's work. It will change the way you think about thinking. Two systems drive the way we think and make choices, Kahneman explains....

Historia
It seems like any other day. You wake up, drink a cup of coffee, and head out. But today, when you open your front door, waiting for you is a small wooden box. The contents of this mysterious box tells you the exact number of years you will live. From suburban doorsteps to desert tents, every person on every continent receives the same box. In an instant, the world is thrust into a collective frenzy. Where did these boxes come from? What do they mean? Is there truth to what they promise?

Historia
The moment is right for critical reflection on what has been assumed to be a core part of schooling. In Ungrading, 15 educators write about their diverse experiences going gradeless. Based on rigorous and replicated research, this is the first book to show why and how faculty who wish to focus on learning, rather than sorting or judging, might proceed. It includes honest reflection on what makes ungrading challenging, and testimonials about what makes it transformative.

Fascinating Techniques
Revisado: 07-04-22
I loved the variety of practical examples of non-graded curriculum techniques. Love Alfie Kohn's work, but way too abstract sometimes. This book grounds change with relateable examples with varying degrees of implementation. Only thing lacking is how to communicate subject importance. Many examples in the book referenced the need to get students invested in the class by making it relevant and important to their lives. I wish there were more examples of how to do with for subjects like algebra.

Great AtlA Homage
Revisado: 07-04-22
Kept the tones and lessons of AtlA, but a little darker. Loved the character interactions and Kioshi's development. Some people seem to dislike Kioshi being portrayed as more human, but I think it's endearing and makes me appreciate how she ended up as tough as she was portrayed in the show. Anyway, great action, conflict, resolution, and characters!

Perfect
Revisado: 06-23-22
This is exactly what a book in the Avatar universe is supposed to feel like. It has all of the best elements of both Korra and AtlA, with none of the drawbacks of Korra. The darker tone was appropriate and imo improved the tension in climatic moments.

Historia
In The Homework Myth, nationally known educator and parenting expert Alfie Kohn systematically examines the usual defenses of homework - that it promotes higher achievement, "reinforces" learning, and teaches study skills and responsibility. None of these assumptions, he shows, actually passes the test of research, logic, or experience.

Intriguing argument
Revisado: 06-15-22
Author/reader still comes off as pretentious as he does in his other books, but you can't fault his logic and dedication to thorough research. Many of what he shares mirrors my experience as a 90s kid. I hated hw and still do. It deprived me of opportunities to learn how to "study" and teach myself, which gave me a disadvantage when I went to college and the professors didn't teach and tests were the entire grade.

Historia
Drawing on a wealth of psychological research, Alfie Kohn points the way to a more successful strategy based on working with people instead of doing things to them. "Do rewards motivate people?" asks Kohn. "Yes. They motivate people to get rewards." Seasoned with humor and familiar examples, Punished by Rewards presents an argument unsettling to hear but impossible to dismiss.

Compelling Arguments, though pretentious tone
Revisado: 05-30-22
If you can get past the author's/reader's academically pretentious tone, he actually gives some sound advice. His claims are backed up in my personal experience in the office with regards to motivation and how "cringy" pizza parties are when leveraged for better work performance.
It's long-winded, but thoroughly addresses every possible counter-argument to his claims. The last 3 chapters where he explains what to do instead of rewards is the best part of the book.

Historia
Michele Borba has been a teacher, educational consultant, and parent for 40 years - and she's never been more worried than she is about this current generation of kids. The high-achieving students she talks with every day are more accomplished, better educated, and more privileged than ever before. They're also more stressed, unhappier, and struggling with anxiety, depression, and burnout at younger and younger ages - "we're like pretty packages with nothing inside," said one young teen.

Probably the best of these types of books
Revisado: 05-21-22
Pros: cites sources, good advice, well argued, author is very experienced.
Cons: slight fear mongering, key traits seem exclusive (like you can only thrive with these 7 traits), all examples of "success" are things like "class president" or "successful inventor at age 6" or "Einstein" which is contrary tonher argument
