A couple of flaws in the plot but still a thoroughly enjoyable read. The main characters are vivid and round.

Excellent

Although I found 3 or 4 points where it was hard to suspend my disbelief, the excellent story and performance made those points negligible. I never wanted to put this book down. Additionally, Tana French can turn a phrase. Some sentences are worth saving in a quotations register, and I did.

Historia
Being on the murder squad is nothing like Detective Antoinette Conway dreamed it would be. Her partner, Stephen Moran, is the only person who seems glad she's there. The rest of her working life is a stream of thankless cases, vicious pranks, and harassment. Antoinette is savagely tough, but she's getting close to the breaking point. Their new case looks like yet another by-the-numbers lovers' quarrel gone bad. Aislinn Murray is blond, pretty, groomed to a shine, and dead in her catalogue-perfect living room, next to a table set for a romantic dinner.

Best of Tana French
Revisado: 07-05-17
Tana French is a wonderful storyteller and, for me, this was her best story yet. "The Trespasser" is not only a terrific detective story, it is character-driven and full of ironies large and small. Descriptions are vivid and put you right there. French can also turn a phrase, which doesn't hurt.

Lots to think about here
Revisado: 05-09-17
Moriarty has a way of weaving seemingly unrelated threads of the plot into a tapestry that seems at first surprising and then, in the end, inevitable: "Oh yeah. That had to be what happened, and why it happened." The groundwork had been brilliantly laid earlier to make the plot work, we come to see later.
Her characterizations are equally well crafted, each personality distinct and vivid. In the beginning of her novels I often think, as I did with this one, "I don't care for these people." Or, "So-and-so is unlikable." But Moriarty manages to make me empathize with most of her characters until I can hardly put the book down because she has made me care what happens to them. This is not my favorite of her works but it's still an excellent read -- not to mention an important subject. There's a lot to think about here.

Historia
Like most gentiles in Nazi-occupied Paris, architect Lucien Bernard has little empathy for the Jews. So when a wealthy industrialist offers him a large sum of money to devise secret hiding places for Jews, Lucien struggles with the choice of risking his life for a cause he doesn't really believe in. Ultimately he can't resist the challenge and begins designing expertly concealed hiding spaces - behind a painting, within a column, or inside a drainpipe - detecting possibilities invisible to the average eye. But when one of his clever hiding spaces fails and the immense suffering of Jews becomes incredibly personal, he can no longer deny reality.

This novel is in a that rare class of books that are hard to forget. Hard to read at times, about events that are hard to imagine, the author imagines some of them for us. The fine narration enhances the well drawn characters.

Outstanding
Revisado: 08-23-16
Beautiful writing, phrasing. + Literary allusions: for example, "the sound and the fury" early on makes one think of "tale told by an idiot" from Shakespeare's Scottish tragedy. These are never obtrusive, just enriching the already rich story. Detailed plot. Fine character development, and we care about these characters. The performance enhanced
the characterization and is perfectly in tune with the whole.
