Historia
France, 1942. At the end of the day, the schoolteacher releases her pupils. She checks they have their identity passes and warns them not to stop until the German guards have let them through the barrier that separates occupied France from Free France. As the little ones fly across the border and into their mothers' arms, she breathes a sigh of relief. No one is safe now. Not even the children.

Love reading about the brave woman and men of WW2
Revisado: 02-27-23
I am so glad people are writing about the many humanitarian heroes of WW2. I cannot learn enough about the bravery and humanity of so many, during arguably one of the world’s darkest periods. In particular, I love reading about the courage of women who selflessly risked their own well being for the sake of others. This book did not disappoint.

Historia
One sunny August afternoon, the residents of Cedar Close throw their annual summer barbecue. Children play in the cherry-tree lined street, tables are laden with food, and the wine is flowing. For Laurie Mills, it’s her first time meeting the neighbours. And it’s the first time she discovers her husband, Robert, is having an affair. Cedar Close has always been a nice place to live - a quiet suburban street where everyone looks out for one another and bad things don’t happen. Until late one evening, when Robert Mills is found dead in his bedroom.

Enjoyed this book!

Kept my interest throughout. It’s a departure from my preference for historical fiction, but it was an enjoyable departure.

Historia
Fred Sasakamoose, torn from his home at the age of seven, endured the horrors of residential school for a decade before becoming one of 120 players in the most elite hockey league in the world. He has been heralded as the first Indigenous player with Treaty status in the NHL. After twelve games, he returned home. When people tell Sasakamoose's story, this is usually where they end it. Sasakamoose's groundbreaking memoir sheds piercing light on Canadian history and Indigenous politics, and follows this man's journey to reclaim pride in a heritage that had been used against him.

Inspiring and heartbreaking.
Revisado: 01-07-23
I read this because of my children’s hockey experiences, and because of the influence of an African-American coach in the Pittsburgh area, working tirelessly to bring this wonderful game to all young people who may not have the financial means to participate. He recommended the book. The world needs more people like Fred to bring us all together.

Historia
When their last outgoing flight is cancelled, Ben finds a charter plane that can take him around the storm and drop him in Denver to catch a connection. And when the pilot says the single-engine prop plane can fit one more, if barely, Ben offers the seat to Ashley, knowing that she needs to get home just as urgently. And then the unthinkable happens. The pilot has a heart attack, and the plane crashes into one of the largest stretches of harsh and remote land in the United States.

Loved it
Revisado: 01-02-23
I have become pretty selective about the narrators voice…at first it seemed mundane. However, shortly after starting the book and being captivated by the story, I also enjoyed the narration.
