Historia
Renée Ballard and the LAPD’s Open-Unsolved Unit get a hot shot DNA connection between a recently arrested man and a serial rapist and murderer who went quiet twenty years ago. The arrested man is only twenty-four, so the genetic link must be familial: His father was the Pillowcase Rapist, responsible for a five-year reign of terror in the city of angels. But when Ballard and her team move in on their suspect, they encounter a baffling web of secrets and legal hurdles. Meanwhile, Ballard’s badge, gun, and ID are stolen.

Outstanding!
Revisado: 03-26-25
I enjoyed the story with all its twist and turns. But what really made this for me was the readers. Renee was voiced with such feeling and nuance and having Titus Welliver voicing Bosch, it was riveting. There were two cases being followed in the story and both had interesting challenges that meshed very well. I can’t recommend this more highly!

Interesting concepts!
Revisado: 09-27-24
I enjoyed the story, though it did seem to bog down a bit in the middle. What caused me to rate this less than excellent was the narrator. It’s hard to describe exactly what the problem was but I guess the intonation is where to start. All the characters were voiced as if they were “snooty”… it’s hard to explain but you will know what I mean if you decide to listen. Also, the British accents of some characters seemed to vary. The “ambassador” at one point had a cockney-like sound and his daughter’s seemed to come and go. I did enjoy the listen and the story held my attention. I recommend it if you think you can ignore the traits I mentioned.

Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

The entire story rang true, from first word to last!
Revisado: 08-16-24
The reader’s voice brought me right into the mountains of Virginia. I knew this was a book on nearly everyone’s favorite book list. I was happy to get “why the title” out of the way early in the book. The story of Demon, told through the title character’s voice, was gut wrenching. This child was honest to a fault (whatever that really means!)- never placing any blame on anyone but himself. If you have never heard of the Melungeons of Appalachian Mountains, you will meet them here in the book. The face of addiction is revealed, especially opioids, but also heroin, cocaine and meth. The many aspects of abject poverty are all examined. You will laugh and cry. Be sure to keep your ears ready for the skill of the writer. I’m sorry I didn’t think to keep a list of the wonderful turns of phrase throughout the book. I loved it 😊!

A mirror to today’s America
Revisado: 07-13-24
This was an outstanding story and those who performed it did a great job. Unfortunately, the story of the treatment of black people in America is not a new one, and the struggle for equality continues. Living in Minnesota, I have no sense of what it was like in the south during the late 1960’s but I’m old enough to remember 1968, with the assassinations and general upheaval. And I still wonder at those who look at blacks as less than themselves. We still have a long way to go.

I like Jack Reacher so of course I liked the book. My criticism is that it took a while to “get into” the story and the threads came together a bit slower than usual.

I really enjoyed the pace of this book. In the last few years I have found several books that tell of wars by those whose lives have been most affected. I always saw tanks and planes and artillery when I heard of wars but now we can hear from those who lived on the battlefields.

“There were no women in Vietnam”!
Revisado: 03-24-24
I learned so much about combat during the Vietnam War but especially about women who were there in many roles. The story finds an idealistic girl, trained as a nurse, who signs up to follow her brother into the war. Nothing goes her way but she does learn a lot about war, the world, and herself. There are a few “soap opera” turns to the story but it was well told and even made me cry a few times, which is very hard to do.

MUST be listened to, not read
Revisado: 03-02-24
I was so glad to have had the author as the reader. After all, who knows better the timing and inflections of the story. It was about India and the author’s accent really added to the immersion into the Indian culture over nearly a century. The story has some heartbreaking moments, in fact many of those. But a strong thread through the book is about enduring even after tragedy. Long listen but well worth it!
