Historia
Low-life writer and unrepentant alcoholic Henry Chinaski was born to survive. After decades of slacking off at low-paying dead-end jobs, blowing his cash on booze and women, and scrimping by in flea-bitten apartments, Chinaski sees his poetic star rising at last. Now, at 50, he is reveling in his sudden rock-star life, running three hundred hangovers a year, and maintaining a sex life that would cripple Casanova.

I just loved this book! (It's not for the fainthearted or easily offended types). For the rest of us, it's a real fun time. I have no idea why I like Henry but I DO! He's AWFUL and so are most of his women "friends" but he has a certain irresistible charm. The reading (more like a PERFORMANCE) is straight on PERFECT-even down to a man reading the women's dialogue. I am going to read all of Bukowski's works. Can't get enough!

I enjoyed this book so much. The author is the best...takes you right there. I loved the characters and never wanted to say "good-bye". It's also so inspirational! Makes you want to be a better person worthy of the company of her characters. The performance of the readers is par non. Seriously THE BEST!

Historia
Heavily tattooed and foul-mouthed, Nadia Bolz-Weber, a former stand-up comic, sure as hell didn't consider herself to be religious-leader material - until the day she ended up leading a friend's funeral in a smoky downtown comedy club. Surrounded by fellow alcoholics, depressives, and cynics, she realized: These were her people. Maybe she was meant to be their pastor. Using life stories, Nadia uses humorous narrative and poignant honesty to portray a woman who is both deeply faithful and deeply flawed, giving hope to the rest of us along the way.

Have you just ever been really surprised by a book? I was on the fence about this book thinking it was perhaps too contrived...tattooed edgy pastor makes her mark in mainstream religious america, telling them what it's all REALLY about. Ohhhh...not so at all. She is brutally honest about her life and shortcomings. She is the real deal. And she talks about her relationship with Jesus and the Gospel in ways that bring it all to life. I have read this book twice and am on my third time. (I have NEVER read a book more than once...EVER). There are so many buried, insightful treasures in this book. We need more voices like hers to make Christianity relevant again in our times.

For Kids?
Revisado: 11-23-13
Any additional comments?
This was an Audible Kids book? It had plenty of sex and violence...not bad for an adult but I am not sure it is appropriate for kids, not even middle/high school kids. It was an interesting exploration of domestic violence and the stream of consciousness opened a window into how all that can happen between people who never thought that would happen to them.

Historia
Observing an encounter between Catholic and Buddhist monks in 1996 at the Abbey of Gethsemani, near where he grew up in rural Kentucky, Fenton Johnson found himself unable to make the sign of the cross. His distance from his childhood faith had become so great - he considered himself a rational, skeptical man - that he could not participate in this most basic ritual. Impelled by this troubling experience, Johnson began a search for the meaning of the spiritual life.

This was a book I will probably listen to several times. There was so much in there from biography to history to dogma to philosophy all woven into what felt like a great conversation with someone who bared their soul to me. "Wow" is all I can say.

Historia
Rory Hendrix is the least likely of Girl Scouts. She hasn't got a troop or even a badge to call her own. But she's checked the Handbook out from the elementary school library so many times that her name fills all the lines on the card, and she pores over its surreal advice for tips to get off the Calle: that is, the Calle de las Flores, the Reno trailer park where she lives with her mother, Jo, the sweet-faced, hard-luck bartender at the Truck Stop.

Any additional comments?
I was attracted to this book thinking it would be funny but I assure you it is not. I also admit that I didn't finish the book, but I didn't because it just got too depressing for me to listen to anymore, not because it wasn't well written or a great story. I found the author's writing style to be pure genius and had the story been a bit lighter, I would have LOVED it.The author actually reads the book too and is good but her tone and style gets monotonous after awhile, adding to the unrelenting depressing quality of the book.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes. I enjoyed this book tremendously. It is a fascinating bird's eye view into a world most of us will never see. I loved the narrator's voice and the voices he used for each of the various characters. The author is so gifted and her characterizations of each person are so tenderly drawn and engaging. I couldn't put the book down. If you liked the movie Slum Dog Millionaire, I think you will love this story too.
