Not much better than the first book in the series. I now know more about Rome than the characters the book was supposed to be about. I love descriptive writing, however, it is truly overdone by the author, most notably about Rome.

The story was formulaic. The characters were flat. There was no sense of anticipation or energy between the hero and the heroine. You know from the start the hero is not going to follow through with the job he was ultimately tasked to do. There was no excitement for me while listening to the audiobook. Nothing to make me want to keep listening.

A redeeming feature was that it was a Kindle Unlimited Audiobook, thus “free” under my Kindle Unlimited subscription.

The best I can give this is 2 stars. Enemies to lovers. Rich male/struggling female. Stockholm Syndrome. The characters are not believable, nor could I find anything that would make me feel for them. Everything about the book is rushed and unpolished.

Narrator that makes every male voice sound so horrible it is embarrassing for the narrator, the author, and the audience. The male voices are done so badly it made me wince.

Since this is a series and the next book is on Kindle Unlimited I will try book 2. I dislike giving bad reviews without trying a different book by the author for a chance at redemption. Crossing my fingers.

Hey AMAZON! Link Audible to Goodreads (you own both companies) so people don’t have to do 2 reviews! Makes for good sense to link the Apps. You have the Kindle app linked to Goodreads, why not Audible?

The narrator was monotonously monotone. The writing subpar and to a certain extent juvenile. There was nothing about the characters that was believable even in a paranormal sense. The heroine of the piece was just flat and sorry to say boring. So DNF at 20%. I am not sorry to say that I won’t be checking out any of this author’s other works.

Great listen/read through Kindle Unlimited. A classic that makes you think about what you’re reading and challenges your preconceived notions of what the world should be. With sentiments and ideas that still resonate in today’s society. I read this in high school many years ago. Not sure if it is still part of the 21st century high school curriculum, if it isn’t, it should be reintroduced.

Extremely juvenile and stilted prose even for a “new adult” audience.  My nephew and niece (aged 24 and 22 respectively) would have found this writing totally out of touch with their age group and laughably out dated.  Dufus, really?  Poor, inadequate, and limited word choice.

No 20 year old girl, Ivy the heroine of the piece, is this criminally naive (biopsychosocially) in the age of the internet.  Paired with the fact she is an active member of an organisation that hunts and kills fae and has grown up in that environment her entire life along with her parents.  She is not a virgin but acts like one and uses it as a crutch for her overdramatic sadness and disappointment over the events of her life.   She is a wilted flower by her own choice.   For the heroine of a novel she is lacklustre at the best of times.  If you are looking for a Kate Daniels type heroine it will not be found here.  She is likened to the Disney character Merdia by Wren, the hero of the piece, but that falls flat too.  Merdia - a Disney character!- is more believable and has much more pluck and moxie than Ivy.

The hero of the story, Wren, is a bit more likeable, however, the author needs to do a ton more work on him to be believable and to pull off the kind of sex appeal the author is seeking to achieve.  The groundwork is there but the author never capitalises it.  Wren, like Ivy, comes across as mentally younger than his stated age.  Curly brown hair, green eyes, dimples, and tatted up like a sex god gave me hope, false though it was.

Also, first person prose is very hard to write well as attested to by this work.  If you are not Anne Frank then an author should think very hard and long before attempting a work in first person.  Hell, even the Kate Daniels series would have been better written in third person.

This was a Audible Plus choice on Audible, in essence a free title with membership.  The second book in the series is also free.  I am willing to give the second book a chance only because it is free.  Crossing my fingers for a much more complete work.

I borrowed the audiobook and the kindle edition so I could switch between listening and reading.
The story was bogged down by minutiae of the period (late 17th century) by the author - who wrote it 1869. I usually like details, however they overwhelm the story and some of said details are really extraneous and betimes irritating. It was written from the hero’s point of view and is true to the way women were looked at as inferior, unstable beings who wouldn’t last a fortnight without a man’s strong hand. I had to constantly keep in mind this manuscript was written during the Victorian Era by a man. I gritted my teeth through the simpering dialogue between the hero and heroine, and the hero’s dialogue with the other female characters of the story.

The basic story in and of itself was good. The depiction of the drama was lacking, no suspense or true angst. I couldn’t connect with the characters most especially the hero telling the story and the trembling, lacklustre heroine.

The male narrator’s voice was not pleasant although he did do a good job switching between the different characters dialects.

The audiobook was superb. 5 stars to the author and narrator. Twisted story of very powerful demigods, gods, and monsters and their struggles and triumphs. Just who are the god and who are the monsters is yet to be determined. The author treats all the gods and monsters like real people, with real feelings, desires, shortcomings, etc., along with the greater issues rulers face. The hero and heroine are both tortured souls in dire need of succour and mutual understanding. The dialogue, at times, is downright brutal between the H&H, especially on Dianna, the heroine’s end. Dianna due to her tortured past and oft repeated rash responses to events, uses words and deeds to devastate Samkiel, the hero of the story. Samkiel is no slouch by any standard, however his past traumas complicate his interactions on every level. Just how disastrous will it have to get before they finally figure it out? World ending? Soul destroying? Engrossing for the reader in the best way possible. Keep them coming Ms. Nicole and Ms. Bowles! You make a great team!

What more can you say about a Firefly novel that spotlights the gruff, incorrigible, and often obtuse Jane Cobb and that silly yellow hat. Great stuff!

I didn’t like the this book at the start. I didn’t like heroine. I didn’t like the first person. I still don’t like the first person. I did end up loving the book and the characters. If you haven’t read this book you are missing out on a fantastic read. Bet you wish you were reading it now. Get going. Get to buying it. Get to reading it! You know you want to get reading because I’m not leaking any spoilers. 😛

Desperately waiting for the next instalment on audiobook!

Loved the story, especially because of the hopeful nature of the ending. James Anderson Foster does a rather excellent job on Firefly’s beloved characters. His rendition of Nathan Fillion’s ‘Mal’ is spectacular. Keep the Firefly novels coming! Can’t get enough!
