Historia
Defying both civil authorities and the Mormon establishment in Salt Lake City, the renegade leaders of these Taliban-like theocracies are zealots who answer only to God; some 40,000 people still practice polygamy in these communities. At the core of Krakauer’s book are brothers Ron and Dan Lafferty, who insist they received a commandment from God to kill a blameless woman and her baby girl. Beginning with a meticulously researched account of this appalling double murder, Krakauer constructs a bone-chilling narrative of messianic delusion, polygamy, savage violence, and unyielding faith.

The number one New York Times best seller by Pulitzer Prize-winning historian David McCullough rediscovers an important chapter in the American story that's "as resonant today as ever" (The Wall Street Journal) - the settling of the Northwest Territory by courageous pioneers who overcame incredible hardships to build a community based on ideals that would define our country.

Turgid and unfocused
Revisado: 07-19-19
I loved 1776, but this turgid and unfocused account the early pioneers in Ohio loses its way. There are some interesting stories within the book but Mr. McCullough’s narration falls into the arcane language of his source materials and quotes far to heavily from those materials to make this an interesting read.

Powerful and Important
Revisado: 07-19-19
Everyone interested in either international affairs or human rights (which should be everyone) should read this book. The very personal story told by Mr. Browder Is a cautionary tale for individuals and countries dealing with Russia, a major international power which is run more like a criminal gang. It’s lessons are especially chilling in the context of Russia’s recent interference with our elections and of the lack of any meaningful response by The beneficiary of Mr. Putin’s manipulation.

Historia
For decades after its founding, America was really two nations—one slave, one free. There were many reasons why this composite nation ultimately broke apart, but the fact that enslaved black people repeatedly risked their lives to flee their masters in the South in search of freedom in the North proved that the "united" states was actually a lie. Fugitive slaves exposed the contradiction between the myth that slavery was a benign institution and the reality that a nation based on the principle of human equality was in fact a prison-house in which millions of Americans had no rights.

Fascinating
Revisado: 05-23-18
I need a little of Genghis Khan other than his role as a conqueror. This fascinating work explores his role in beginning the process of globalization. For unknown reasons, audible has moved the introduction to the final chapter. Listen to that first as it contains much information that will be helpful for the remainder of the book. The book is engaging and supplies an important slice of history that is missing from many people’s world view.

Historia
A major audiobook about the future of the world, blending intellectual and natural history and field reporting into a powerful account of the mass extinction unfolding before our eyes. Over the last half a billion years, there have been five mass extinctions, when the diversity of life on Earth suddenly and dramatically contracted. Scientists around the world are currently monitoring the sixth extinction, predicted to be the most devastating extinction event since the asteroid impact that wiped out the dinosaurs.

Interesting and disheartening
Revisado: 11-17-17
This book presents a fascinating look both at ancient extinctions and the creatures they affected and at the current largely human-caused extinction that is occurring on the planet. The author reads the preface which is used as a sample for the book. Unfortunately, she did not read the entire work since her voice is well-suited to the subject matter and conveys the humorous asides that are found throughout the book. The soft spoken reeder is not well suited to the text. Still, the collection of stories that illustrate both past extinctions and the current extinction are engaging and well worth a listen.

The minutiae of history
Revisado: 11-17-17
While the minutiae involved in the average lives of ancient Egyptians, Greeks and others may form the foundation to help understand a sweep of history, here it becomes the subject itself. There is little to connect the laundry lists, to do lists and shopping lists of the ancient peoples discussed in these lectures. While the lecturer is engaging, the subject matter becomes tedious because it is unconnected to the larger sweep of history or even to particular events or individuals who lived during those times. While I understand that is the author's area of interest, the lectures are like listening to a symphony without the strings.

Historia
Under the One Child Policy, everyone plotted to have a son. Now 40 million of them can't find wives. China's One Child Policy and its cultural preference for male heirs has created a society overrun by 40 million unmarriageable men. By the year 2030, more than 25 percent of men in their late 30s will not have families of their own. An Excess Male is one such leftover man's quest for love and family under a state that seeks to glorify its past mistakes and impose order through authoritarian measures, reinvigorated Communist ideals, and social engineering.

Enjoyable
Revisado: 10-01-17
Ms. Shen King's book draws the listener into a creatively imagined near future China resulting from China's one child policy. Her use of multiple points of view help the listener understand and empathize with the diverse characters struggling against the state to become a family. Her book is both an engaging tale and reflective on the nature of family and the acceptance of others.

Somnolent
Revisado: 09-07-17
The author's use of passive voice and rhetorical questions gives this book a professional tone, and not in a good way. The reader matches that tone. The the wandering timeline and lack of a clear narrative makes this a book to avoid. I enjoy nonfiction and history but this book completely failed to capture my interest. No doubt the author knows her subject. Perhaps those who already have a strong grasp of Roman history will make it through the dull presentation and appreciate the revisionist perspective, but 5 hours was all I could take.

Historia
On May 1, 1915, with WWI entering its tenth month, a luxury ocean liner as richly appointed as an English country house sailed out of New York, bound for Liverpool, carrying a record number of children and infants. The passengers were surprisingly at ease, even though Germany had declared the seas around Britain to be a war zone. For months, German U-boats had brought terror to the North Atlantic.

Revisado: 07-07-17
The first half is overburdened with excruciating detail which you could skim if you were reading but is made more tedious by the slow pace of the reader. I found his voice to be over dramatic and annoying at times. Second half is more interesting. Not nearly as good as Devil In The White City. Better to read so you can skim the tedious bits .
