As a medical professional, who took my first Ambulance ride in 1980 as a nursing student, I am amazed that this wonderful history was not part of my professional development. so much of what I have done since 1980 was directly influenced by the work and scholarship documented in this beautifully written and read book. I am thankful for those who lived these experiences and so grateful to the author for sharing their struggles for relevance. I often felt their burden and cheered them on. John is a perfect Protagonist for what was happening in America in those years.

An absolutely beautiful story. the only drawback is the narration. There are places where you cannot distinguish one character from another. the voice quality of the narrator is raspy without sufficient flexibility to prevent confusion of characters, conversations, and background thoughts. This may be much better to read than to listen to.

This is a well written and sweetly spoken story of life and legacy. I particularly appreciate the authors humble reach to comprehend the times his progenators lived in.
We are all birthed and raised by people who bring their life experiences to bear in our rearing. The times they know have moved beyond them by the time they hold us in their arms. It is our fate to wonder why they see the world differently than we do. Our parents world and ours only meet at the juncture where their hopes and dreams smile into our infant eyes. We will never truely comprehend the sweep of our parents lives - but for a brief moment, if we reach for it, we may see and appreciate the life that brought us forth. This story captures that reach and more.

Very good and plausible story but the reading of it was cumbersome. I found the vocals confusing in many parts. I might have enjoyed it better in print.

I was a child as many if these events unfolded. I remember the angst and travail of simply existing in a world where I was not wanted. I remember the discomfort of seeing my articulate, educated, law abiding, socially engaged parents looked at as less than. I can recall the pain of not knowing if I would ever be valued outside my own home. This story; the way it is told and the evolution of the relationship between RFK and MLK; gives me hope for today and (in somes ways) helps to sooth the wounds of yesterday. I grew to adulthood wondering what the world would have been if the two men had survived. This book recreates a sense of urgency and hope. I would recommend it to everyone who is seeking to understand the undercurrents of the times in which we live.
