Heartwarming, body-positive story
Revisado: 03-17-20
I loved this book! It was so refreshing to have an entire cast of characters who were plus sized, and who found true love anyway. This is Carolyn Brown at her finest, full of relatable characters, quirky grandmothers, and deep friendships. Highly recommended!

Historia
Stella's mama never should've put Stella on the church prayer list. With Stella's 27th birthday coming up fast, Nancy desperately wants to see her daughter married and giving her grandbabies. Petitioning heaven seems like a surefire way to get it done. But in Cadillac, Texas, where the gossip's hotter than the city's famous jalapeño peppers, it isn't long before all hell breaks loose.

Beautiful story, bad choice of voice actor
Revisado: 03-13-20
The voice actor sounded way too old to be speaking from the perspective of a 25-year-old. Also, several words were read wrong. I'm not sure if they were typos on the script, or if they were just misread. I'm sure this voice actor would be an excellent choice for a more mature character, but I've just gotten so used to Brittany Pressley narrating Carolyn Brown books that I think she would have been perfect for this one too.
The story itself is lovely. It's set in a small town, with all the accompanying charms and annoyances. It shows the worst parts of church and the best parts of people, and I heartily enjoyed it.

Poorly paced, voice performance had issues
Revisado: 03-11-20
This is definitely my least favorite of the 4 full length Sherlock Holmes novels. Arthur Conan Doyle took forever to get to his point at several parts of the story. I think he was trying to build suspense, but was more frustrating than anything else. Even the voice actor sounded bored by the plodding pace and word padding. And it seems that the editor of the audiobook was so bored as well that 2 or 3 bloopers/repeats of sentences were unintentionally left in the track.

This is Carolyn Brown at her finest. The pacing of the story was excellent, and the voice acting was near perfect. If you're a fan of Carolyn Brown, or lighthearted romances in small towns, I highly recommend this.

Historia
I’d never forgotten him - a man I’d yet to meet. Griffin Quinn was my childhood pen pal, the British boy who couldn’t have been more different from me. Over the years, through hundreds of letters, we became best friends, sharing our deepest, darkest secrets and forming a connection I never thought could break. Until one day, it did. Then, out of the blue, a new letter arrived. A scathing one - one with eight years of pent-up anger. I had no choice but to finally come clean as to why I stopped writing. Griffin forgave me, and we were able to rekindle our childhood connection.

Absolutely stunning
Revisado: 03-02-20
The title and cover do not do this book justice. The lead character is agoraphobic with an anxiety disorder and PTSD, and this is the first time that I could actually truly empathize with a fictional character. The authors treated her mental illness so well and so accurately, as well as the difficulties it brings to any relationship. Griffin is the perfect partner for someone with Luca's disabilities, and it gives me a better idea of what to look for in a partner as well. I couldn't stop listening to this book, and the performances of the voice actors couldn't be more perfect. Highly recommended!

Maybe not the best Sherlock Holmes novel
Revisado: 02-29-20
This is my least favorite Sherlock Holmes story so far. The plot is poorly paced, and Sherlock spends so much time moping around. The descriptions and portrayals of the Indian characters were kind of racist, and I was actually offended at how the character Tonga was presented. He was made out to be an absolute savage, more beast than man. The author didn't even bother to give him motives or character traits, he was treated like an animal, a well-trained pet of the villain.
The only redeeming part of this book was Mary. Her blossoming romance with Watson was quite charming.

Historia
In A Study in Scarlet, Holmes and Watson's first mystery, the pair are summoned to a south London house where they find a dead man whose contorted face is a twisted mask of horror. The body is unmarked by violence but on the wall a mysterious word has been written in blood. The police are baffled by the crime and its circumstances. But when Sherlock Holmes applies his brilliantly logical mind to the problem he uncovers a tragic tale of love and deadly revenge.

I've loved the Sherlock Holmes BBC series with Benedict Cumberbatch from the very first episode, and I must say the original novels are just as riveting. Highly recommended, and you can't go wrong at this price point. The Voice actor was excellent as well.

Like Fifty Shades with Elon Musk
Revisado: 02-26-20
The voice actor gave an excellent performance, but the story is problematic for me. First of all, I just can't take Elon Musk as a romantic lead seriously, and the male lead is very obviously based on him. Then the author made him even creepier by treading deeply into stalker territory within the first few chapters.
In their first meeting, the protagonist is alarmed that billionaire Eli Stone (the potential love interest) had her background checked when she offered to buy one of his properties. Now that's par for the course in multimillion dollar business dealings, but when she confronted him about this, his response was simply, "You intrigued me." (or something to that effect) That's pure nonsense. He could have said something like, "In business, it's always best to know who you're dealing with." And it would make more sense for him to be intrigued by her AFTER reading her file. But no, this billionaire businessman was intrigued by a woman he had never seen and knew nothing about. If this were real life, I'd suspect him of projecting his desires onto her, as though she were some sort of blank canvas. He asks her on a date, and she refuses. He plays some mind games that make her uncomfortable, and she leaves the meeting.
Five months later, she's changed her number twice, and he still manages to contact her, persistently asking for dates in spite of her saying no multiple times. And what I find problematic is that red flags like this are framed as either romantic or mildly bothersome, rather than threatening.
This novel has all the problems of the Fifty Shades book series (the movies were thankfully tamed down later on) when it comes to stalking and potentially abusive behavior. If you're into Fifty Shades and are somehow turned on by Elon Musk, then this may be the book for you. But for me, it's a hard pass.

I've been a huge fan of the BBC Sherlock Holmes series (with Benedict Cumberbatch) since it began, but I've never actually read the books themselves. This did not disappoint, and I quickly made my second Sherlock Holmes audiobook purchase. It's lovely because there's wit and suspense without too much gore.

Meaningful but sad
Revisado: 02-22-20
It's a mostly sad, poignant story set during the Vietnam War. It touches a lot on mental health issues, and I think the author treated the topic very well. It technically has a happy ending, but the overall tone of the story was just a little too melancholic for me.
