Historia
In 1992, the deadliest year in Chicago’s history, seven-year-old Dantrell Davis was shot and killed in front of his elementary school inside the public housing complex Cabrini-Green. What happened to Dantrell led to a truce among Chicago’s gangs, but it also ignited a national panic about poverty and violence in America’s cities. Dantrell’s name would soon be used to demolish all of Chicago’s high-rise public housing, displacing tens of thousands of low-income families.

An important moment in Chicago History
Revisado: 12-02-24
I remember this story and I also remember all of the high-rise projects being demolished. As MPH student and Public Health practitioner primarily focused on housing it’s eye-opening to hear this story through this new lens and saddening that not much has changed to desegregate the city.
I believe Chicago is reaping what was sown during this time. The poverty and crime on the south and the west sides have been ignored for so long, no one outside of these areas cared until the crime came to their neighborhoods. Until we address the systemic root causes the city will continue this cycle of violence.

This Needs To Be On Everyone’s 2019 Bookclub List
Revisado: 01-02-19
I've been on my own transformational journey from perfectionism, striving, competing, busyness.... and the such for a few years now. The opportunity to read this book came along at a time when I knew that this was a conversation that needed to be brought to light especially in our current cultural climate but didn't really have the words to articulate what was going on. Then came True You. It felt like Michelle had been reading my mail. Like she knew things about me that I'd only whispered in the dark. This book brought to light the resounding truth that we're really all more alike than different. Our struggles are not unique and are thus better shared.
I could not stop high-fiving the book one moment and weeping with it the next. I'm going through it again, this time with a small group of girlfriends, we're all looking forward to being free from our false selves and discovering our "True You-ness"

Historia
Just when Glennon Doyle Melton was beginning to feel she had it all figured out - three happy children, a doting spouse, and a writing career so successful that her first book catapulted to the top of the New York Times best seller list - her husband revealed his infidelity and she was forced to realize that nothing was as it seemed. A recovering alcoholic and bulimic, Glennon found that rock bottom was a familiar place. In the midst of crisis, she knew to hold on to what she discovered in recovery: that her deepest pain has always held within it an invitation to a richer life.

Next time I'll skip the 5 Star Reviews

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
I'm not sure... This book just wasn't for me. I had a hard time connecting to the story, or mustering up any empathy for the author.
What was most disappointing about Glennon Doyle Melton’s story?
I'm sure some can relate to her story, but I as a 40-something black woman could not. At all. I also cringed at some of the details. I think I made it to Chapter 5 before I gave up. I'd ignored this book for quite some time, then I saw an excerpt from her Oprah interview and thought eh... why not. I should not have. Definitely returning it.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
She sounds like a child reading this book. It just sounds strange hearing the type of adult language in the book with that voice.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Nope.

Historia
Researcher and thought leader Dr. Brené Brown offers a powerful new vision that encourages us to dare greatly: to embrace vulnerability and imperfection, to live wholeheartedly, and to courageously engage in our lives. In Daring Greatly, Dr. Brown challenges everything we think we know about vulnerability. Based on 12 years of research, her book argues that vulnerability is not weakness but rather our clearest path to courage, engagement, and meaningful connection.

I wish I'd read the reviews first...

Would you try another book from Brené Brown and/or Karen White?
I absolutely adore Brene Brown and love hearing her speak. I couldn't get through 10 minutes of this audiobook. I really wish I'd read the reviews first. I guess I'll have to buy the physical book because I'm still interested in the information.
