Great historical escape
Revisado: 08-12-21
I was looking for a road-trip book that my husband and I could both enjoy in the car. This book fit the bill - great narrator (some narrators are hard to understand while driving) and a swashbuckling pirate tale. We learned a lot of history that tied together bits that we already knew. Turns out Drake was the ultimate privateer, always up for a sea voyage and some plundering of ships. But unlike some of his contemporaries, he was not into subjugation of the people he encountered, and paradoxically for that era, some of the groups he encountered were quite fond of him. Drake had no interest in botany, zoology, sociology, or geology, so his voyages did not advance knowledge of the regions he explored. This book will take you out to sea and back in time, and sometimes that’s just the ticket.

Perfect pandemic pastoral
Revisado: 05-07-21
You are probably familiar with this Herriot book and possibly the old or the new television series, all of which are highly recommended. This audiobook is narrated by Nicholas Ralph, the actor who plays James in the new series. His Scottish brogue is delightful. Listening feels like Herriot himself is telling you his stories. If you need a break from the craziness of the world, this book will take you on a journey to pre-World War II Yorkshire and introduce you to the world of a country veterinarian.

Historia
From one of Outside magazine's "Literary All-Stars" comes the thrilling true tale of the fastest boat ride ever, down the entire length of the Colorado River and through the Grand Canyon, during the legendary flood of 1983. In the spring of 1983, massive flooding along the length of the Colorado River confronted a team of engineers at the Glen Canyon Dam with an unprecedented emergency that may have resulted in the most catastrophic dam failure in history.

Great Summer Read
Revisado: 07-11-18
Do you need an Audible book for your family car trip this summer? This book is a smart choice that the entire family can listen to together. There's literally something for everyone: History and geology of the Grand Canyon and the Colorado River basin, river running, engineering of dams, power production, and the conservation movement. As other reviewers have mentioned, the narration is weak and some words are mispronounced (most egregiously corral as coral...). However, this book is well worth the listen. I found myself tracking down the paperback in order to view the photos.

A Favorite Listen
Revisado: 12-09-12
My fiction club had this title on its list of potential reads, so I went ahead and listened to it. "The Paris Wife" is a fictionalized account of Hadley Hemmingway during the years of her romance and marriage to Ernest. The book takes you to Europe during the flapper years and introduces you to the oh-so-strong personality of the young writer. You really want Hadley to have a bit more spine in the relationship, but alas, she is but the first of his four wives and many lovers. The story is perhaps a bit "lite", but the audiobook is excellent.

My first Audible book
Revisado: 03-11-10
A colleague gave me a gift certificate to Audible, so I joined and started looking at the titles. I've made a 45 minute-each way commute for many years and had just about heard everything at my public library. The reviews for this book caught my attention, so I got it. WOW - what a great book. I had to go buy it in paperback for my husband and my daughter to read while I was still listening to the Audible recording. The book is a sweeping epic story that is captivating on all levels. The narration is excellent. The author is a doctor, so some of the medical procedures are described in great detail, but it is not overwhelming.
