Physically Repulsive Misogyny and Sadism
Revisado: 07-17-18
Please keep in mind, as you read this critique, that I have never felt obliged or moved to review any other book--ever. Also, I am neither a wilting flower nor a reactionary christian (in fact, I'm agnostic). So, when I say that this book is repulsive, I am not being deliberately melodramatic. I mean quite simply that it would be easier to watch someone commit suicide, than to read past the sixth chapter of the book. In that chapter (which is where I am leaving the book), the reader is exposed to the first person narrative of a homicidal serial rapist. The reader must then bear witness to the rapist's descriptions of the sexual abuse he inflicts on a young policewoman, in whose brain he has implanted a device which compels her passivity. Throughout extended passages of graphic sexual torture the reader must listen to the psychotic rantings of the narrator, to whom the author gradually seems to be trying to impart a kind of sympathy.
I truly cannot imagine how any sane human being could bear to write about such atrocities. Regardless of the ways in which the book might develop, there is no justification for these early chapters.
I am keeping this work of sadistic fantasy because Audible insists that to post a review of a book, one must own it; and it is more important for me to expose the extent to which this work is singularly rebarbative, than it is to deny it's author the price of my credit.

Historia
Old ghosts of different kinds come back to haunt Felix, in the fourth gripping Felix Castor novel. Names and faces he thought he'd left behind in Liverpool resurface in London, bringing Castor far more trouble than he'd anticipated. Childhood memories, family traumas, sins old and new, and a council estate that was meant to be a modern utopia until it turned into something like hell...these are just some of the sticks life uses to beat Felix Castor with as things go from bad to worse for London's favourite freelance exorcist.

Finally, a British narrator for a British Novel!!!
Revisado: 01-20-17
Unlike other reviewers, no doubt Americans, I don't think Michael Kramer was the right choice for these novels. Although he is an excellent narrator in general, Kramer simply does not have the range of British dialects in his repertoire to make Carey's books sound authentic. And Damien Lynch is not only a great narrator in general, but he can do a cracking good scouse accent, whether or not he's a native Liverpudlian. Lynch does a brilliant job of bringing Carey's text to life.

Historia
What Ian Rankin is to Edinburgh David Mark is to the seaport of Hull in Northern England. This is the beginning of a dynamic, thrilling series featuring detective Sgt. Aector McAvoy, a psychologically-probing investigator who finds patterns and motives in seemingly unrelated deaths in his hardscrabble town.

EXCRUCIATING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Revisado: 07-29-15
What disappointed you about The Dark Winter?
The protagonist, Detective Sergeant Aector McAvoy is such a craven, irredeemably moronic figure that one cannot even appreciate the genuinely intriguing elements of the mystery as they come together. And due to the fact that it is he who interacts with some genuinely interesting characters throughout the narrative, one cannot help but long for a different story, involving the latter, but absolutely lacking DS McAvoy.
Did John Curless do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
Curless is exceptional; unfortunately, since he spends most of the story narrating from McAvoy's perspective, one must listen to the pusillanimous, weepy, submissive voice he uses for McAvoy for most of the audiobook.
