Historia
In the spring of 2020, Lara’s three daughters return to the family's orchard in Northern Michigan. While picking cherries, they beg their mother to tell them the story of Peter Duke, a famous actor with whom she shared both a stage and a romance years before at a theater company called Tom Lake. As Lara recalls the past, her daughters examine their own lives and relationship with their mother, and are forced to reconsider the world and everything they thought they knew.

Ann Patchett’s best!
Revisado: 01-15-25
I always say the best after every Ann Patchett book. Tom Hanks did a fabulous job on The Dutch House and Meryl Streep was even better with this book. The author is a wonderful story teller. No excess drama or sad endings…just a good story.

Simplistic dialogue and story

If you have ever listened to Louis L’Amore books, this storyline and narrator are similar. I like the latter but not really savvy like current espionage books.

Historia
With President Anthony Cook convinced that Mitch Rapp poses a mortal threat to him, CIA Director Irene Kennedy is forced to construct a truce between the two men. The terms are simple: Rapp agrees to leave the country and stay in plain sight for as long as Cook controls the White House. In exchange, the administration agrees not to make any moves against him. This fragile détente holds until Cook’s power-hungry security adviser convinces him that Rapp has no intention of honoring their agreement. To put him on the defensive, they leak the identity of his partner, Claudia Gould.

Storyline lively if unlikely but George Guidall makes every Mitch Rapp tale believable. Glad the series has continued with Kyle Mills.

Great first two books
Revisado: 06-17-23
Loved the first two in the series largely because of Christopher Lane's narration. The story line is slow and methodical but I like that in a murder mystery. Changing narrators for the third and fourth books so altered my listening experience, returned the audible book. I am sure there are contractural issues, availability etc but how can an author imagine changing such a distinctive voice for his story as was Christopher Lane. Might try reading if available in my library.

1660 England. General Edward Whalley and his son-in law Colonel William Goffe board a ship bound for the New World. They are on the run, wanted for the murder of King Charles I—a brazen execution that marked the culmination of the English Civil War, in which parliamentarians successfully battled royalists for control.

Excellent story and narration
Revisado: 05-05-23
I agree with another reviewer that none of the main characters were likable. The story, however, is a very interesting and occasionally thrilling part of American/British history from the 1600s. No wonder we separated from Britain! Not sure why it took another 100+ years.

Narrator cannot salvage
Revisado: 05-05-23
Julia Whelan is an excellent narrator but this book was too awful for her to salvage. The author has a “trope” that quickly becomes repetitive and predictable. I finished only because needed for a bookclub. Are authors now just aiming at women’s bookclubs offering one idea rather than developing characters and interesting storylines? This book seems to be popular so clearly I am in a minority.

Historia
Dombey and Son is vintage Dickens and explores the classic themes of betrayal, cruelty and deceit. Dombey's dysfunctional relationships are painted against a backdrop of social unrest in industrialized London, which is populated by a host of fascinating and memorable secondary characters. The complete and unabridged novel is brought spectacularly to life by veteran reader David Timson.

Sarah Molo poor narrator
Revisado: 01-08-22
My primary problem with this book is the female narrator and the female story. Was so annoying I skipped half of her chapters. RCBray could have done her chapters much better. Too bad after two good novels to have this one fail half the time largely because of the narrator.
