I managed to squeeze one more book into 2019 before the holidays, and Murder on Air Force One turned out to be the BEST audio book I listened to this year. The story is incredibly suspense-filled, with the murder of a journalist in the first few minutes. What makes the murder unique is that she is a member of the Press Corps on board Air Force One. Anyone could have committed the murder: a rival journalist, a guest on board the President's plane, a member of the Presidential staff, or even the President or First Man. Not only do we want to find out whodunit, but also we want to get to the reason why she was killed. Enter Kate Dawson, a homicide inspector with the San Francisco Police Department. In the author's other thrillers, Flynn's protagonist has fought against religious fanatics, a serial killer, a brother-sister duo who trade in drugs and weapons, and a cartel that deals in human trafficking. This time, she appears to be outmatched by a ruthless female President, her amoral First Man, and a handful of other suspects who each have a motive of their own. I loved following the clues (along with the Inspector), and was surprised by the ultimate revelation. The writing was masterful, and the narration by Kevin Chambers was outstanding. Overall, I loved this story, and have no problem giving it 5-stars across the board. Every so often, you read an author, and something very positive clicks. That's what happened here. I could easily see this book being made into a big budget action-adventure movie. Thanks, Audible!

I remember reading Architects of Armageddon a couple of years ago when it first came out in paperback. The book really impressed me, and I always wanted to come back to it because it's just one of those books that I don't think reading it once will suffice. There's obviously a lot more going on there than what initially meets the eye. When Audible released it as an audio book, I decided to "read" it again. I will say that Kevin Chambers' sensitive narrative voice hits all of the right notes, from the somewhat disturbing murder-suicide in the beginning to the triumphant victory at the end. I cried when he cried and I cheered when Chambers raised his voice in glee. I don't think any other narrator would have done half as good a job as he did with Flynn's outstanding narrative. So, let's talk about the book. There's the obvious story, which is about Kate Dawson, a veteran homicide detective who is seemingly suffering from some sort of mental illness like PTSD from her recent ordeal at the hands of a serial killer. She is clearly not in her right mind, and despite her work with the departmental shrink, she has to come face to face with the fact she is struggling with real-world demons of her own. These demons compound her present reality and murder investigation which involves members of a religious cult putting their children to death. Only when she confronts the "architects" who are orchestrating these murders for their own sinister purpose does she realize how ill-equipped she is to stop them. That doesn't stop her from trying, and only when she makes peace with herself and confront the guilt she feels about killing an innocent woman in a previous murder investigation does she begin to heal and get stronger to take on the bad guys. But then there is also the author's underlying message about salvation and redemption which are fundamentally Christian virtues. While Kate Dawson appears to be a secular civil servant who doesn't believe in God, Flynn challenges his protagonist at various stages in the narrative about the utter senselessness of embracing a culture built on atheistic beliefs. Author Flynn reminds Kate - and the rest of us - that while we may not believe in God, He clearly still believes in us. Kate Dawson eventually overcomes her demons - both inside her and those who plot to destroy the world - and emerges as a victorious sinner. She's still got a long way to go, but allied with her "better angels" she can accomplish anything she puts her mind to do. I love this message.

Intimate Bondage was the first book in the Kate Dawson thrillers series. For a debut novel, it introduces the female homicide detective to readers/listeners, and charts the course for future adventures. Kate is new to the Homicide Bureau, but is keenly mentored by a 20+ year veteran of the San Francisco Police Department named Frank Miller. Like his rumpled trench coat and well-worn oxford shoes, the senior inspector has seen plenty of homicides in his day. This one - being a sex crime - is pretty gruesome, but he takes it in stride. Retirement for him is just around the corner, and this will likely be his last investigation. Both he and Dawson work with a handful of other detectives and the medical examiner - each developed with their own unique abilities and quirky behaviors. James Roberts, the head of homicide, does not get along with the veteran inspector and by extension mistrusts Kate as well. The City is also a major character in the story. Clues from the crime scene lead in a specific way, and before long, Frank Miller and Kate Dawson are plunged into San Francisco's dark underbelly of sex clubs, strip joints, and porn shops, in particular the Black Rose, a club that caters to the BDSM crowd. Kate meets a psychology professor who may be a person of interest because he has written a book about BDSM. Divorced, she is attracted to him, and finds herself playing a cat-and-mouse game with him, as she tries to catch her serial killer. The suspense from page one to the last page is incredibly intense as the bodies begin to mount up and her partner is taken off the case by the Chief of Police for impugning a witness friendly with the Mayor and the Mayor's costly redevelopment plans for the city. Like a pawn in a very elaborate chess game, Kate feels blocked at every turn, but still manages to keep after her killer. Dawson fights for every last clue, starting the story as a rookie homicide detective, and eventually earning her stripes as a fully-fledged investigator. This is a phenomenal debut novel, with plenty of twists and turns, and a surprise ending worthy of the great Alfred Hitchcock. With Dawson now fixed in place at the SFPD, she is ready to take on other homicides in future tales written by an impressive John Flynn. I loved this book, and I highly recommend it to others who like well-written and plotted crime thrillers.

More Action & Adventure is Good!

Merchants of Death is packed with more action and adventure, romance, intrigue, suspense, mystery, and good-ole-fashioned thrills than any three or four thrillers that I've read this year. Flynn's narrative, as expertly executed by Geoffrey Boyes, is fast-paced and exciting from page one, and doesn't surrender its frantic pace until a quiet, heart-felt flashback to the day when Kate Dawson first walked into the Homicide Bureau in its epilogue. I loved the characters, the setting (from a dangerous Chinatown to a luxurious castle in the hills above San Francisco Bay), overall story, and a tale which seems to be ripped from today's headlines. Do yourself a favor: Find a nice easy chair, stock the room with plenty of soft drinks and popcorn, and settle in for a thrilling audio book that's better than anything you'll find on television tonight. You can thank me later.

Big Thumbs Up from Sci-Fi Book Club!

Revisado: 10-17-19

My Sci-Fi Book Club recently selected The Jovian Dilemma, based on the fact the author was a three-time Hugo Nominee, for our book of the month. I'm pleased to report our choice was an excellent one. The story was fast-paced at 6 hours, but proved to be a fun read with all the political and espionage and intrigue. Several key people aboard the space station are targeted for assassination; one unlucky guy just happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and he gets caught in an apparent act of sabotage, when someone takes out the station's communications room. But that is just the backdrop for an extraordinary tale of first contact between the Jovian lifeforms on Jupiter and representatives of mankind that are screwing around with the Jovian's precious environment. Add a brilliant but flawed politician, a duplicitous love interest, a virtuous and good-hearted scientist who first discovered the Jovians, a slimy political operative, and you've got the makings of a tell-all conspiracy about political corruption that seems ripped from the headlines of today's New York Times. Nearly all of the members of our group loved this book, and have ranked it as one of our top books this year. The lone standout was our resident nerd who wanted everything explained to him, even though we all agree this was a work of science fiction and not a science text book. I am hoping one day he learns the difference but then he's partial to Godzilla movies and doesn't have a whole lot of taste when it comes to excellent story-telling. The rest of us, as I said, loved the book. Well worth the read.
