Historia
As soon as man discovered writing, he began engaging in historiography (historical writing and philosophy), but paleoanthropology only really began in the late 1800s. As archaeologists began finding bones in European caves of a human race that was very different than any race in the modern world, the study of paleoanthropology was born. The race of those early humans who were found in the European caves were later termed Neanderthals, and for quite some time, they were believed to have been the race from which many modern humans were directly descended.

The introductory material didn't address all of the information I've learned, and I'm far from an expert. I was rather disappointed with the content.

Drawing on their own cross cultural experience in global mission, O'Brien and Richards show how better self-awareness and understanding of cultural differences in language, time, and social mores allow us to see the Bible in fresh and unexpected ways. Getting beyond our own cultural assumptions is increasingly important for being Christians in our interconnected and globalized world. Learn to read Scripture as a member of the global body of Christ.

Revisado: 08-17-21
I got so much out of this audio book that I ordered a paperback copy for my husband, who received his M.Div. from a liberal seminary. Many of the points were familiar, but the interpretations--particularly those using contemporary non-Western cultures--were very helpful.

Writer for the New York Times and GQ, Mark Adams is also the acclaimed author of Mr. America. In this fascinating travelogue, Adams follows in the controversial footsteps of Hiram Bingham III, who’s been both lionized and vilified for his discovery of the famed Lost City in 1911—but which reputation is justified?

Historia
Combining vibrant novelistic storytelling with extensive research, interviews, and previously unpublished accounts, Simon Parkin describes for the first time the role that women played in developing the Allied strategy that, in the words of one admiral, "contributed in no small measure to the final defeat of Germany." Rich with unforgettable cinematic detail and larger-than-life characters, A Game of Birds and Wolves is a heart-wrenching tale of ingenuity, dedication, perseverance, and love, bringing to life the imagination and sacrifice required to defeat the Nazis at sea.

Fascinating slice of history!--but
Revisado: 09-01-20
I would have liked to have heard more about the WRENs. Didn't *any* of them (other than the couple mentioned at the end) keep a diary? Didn't *anyone* think that their part of the story was worth recording? I guess I need to be satisfied that this book was produced, at all, and gives credit to them as a whole, in a way that probably would have been unimaginable in the 1940s.

It wasn't the ending I'd hoped for--it was much, much better. Some parts seemed a bit anachronistic, but this tale certainly had more substance than her series books.

Historia
Zachary Quinto - best known for his role as the Nimoy-approved Spock in the recent Star Trek reboot and the menacing, power-stealing serial killer, Sylar, in Heroes - brings his well-earned sci-fi credentials and simmering intensity to this audio-exclusive novella from master storyteller John Scalzi. One day, not long from now, it becomes almost impossible to murder anyone - 999 times out of a thousand, anyone who is intentionally killed comes back. How? We don't know.

Revisado: 10-23-19
What I really like about science fiction is how it sometimes tweaks just one little thing and completely changes the world as we know it. This novella was one of those. My mind will be spinning with the possible repercussions for a long time.

Chilling but few surprises.
Revisado: 10-23-18
For once, I think Scott Brick's smooth, urbane voice was much too cultured for the story. A more ordinary or more raw voice would have suited the story better.

Historia
The Tudor period conjures up images of queens and noblewomen in elaborate court dress, of palace intrigue and dramatic politics. But if you were a woman, it was also a time when death during childbirth was rife, when marriage was usually a legal contract, not a matter for love, and the education you could hope to receive was minimal at best. Yet the Tudor century was also dominated by powerful and dynamic women in a way that no era had been before.

I appreciate the depth and breadth of the scholarship. This book tells the stories of the famous, infamous, and unknown. Most importantly it gives voices to women, whose stories rarely make the mainstream.

I know next to nothing about England in the 50s, so I wasn't sure I'd like this series. I very much do, though, and am sad that this is the last book. I was looking forward to seeing the characters grow and develop.

An elusive courtesan, Marthe de Florian had cultivated a life of art and beauty, casting out all recollections of her impoverished childhood in the dark alleys of Montmartre. With Europe on the brink of war, she shares her story with her granddaughter, Solange Beaugiron, using her prized possessions to reveal her innermost secrets. Most striking of all are a beautiful string of pearls and a magnificent portrait of Marthe painted by the Italian artist Giovanni Boldini.
