Historia
One day, a cataclysmic event occurs: all of the white people in America walk into the nearest body of water. A year later, Charlie Brunton is a Black man living in an entirely new world. Having served time in prison for a wrongful conviction, he’s now a professor of electric and solar power systems at Howard University when he receives a call from someone he wasn’t even sure existed: his daughter Sidney, a nineteen-year-old left behind by her white mother and step-family.

Not your typical tale regarding race.
Revisado: 02-07-25
Cebo weaves a narrative where race is central to the story, but not the story itself. So many layers. It’s a father daughter story, an identity story, and a framing of the social construct that is race. I could envision this on screen.

Classic whodunnit
Revisado: 08-18-24
The story itself was good with many twists and turns. Some you see coming and are predictable, but most make you go “oh sh$@“! The reason for the lower rating was the reader. Her voice and pitch didn’t go with the story at all.

Supreme excellence!
Revisado: 05-16-24
This was such an excellent story! Belle exceeded what was expected of women in the 19th century by all measures and became one of the most respected art buyer and curators in history. To know that she accomplished all this while carrying the psychological burden of having to keep her race secret makes it all the more astonishing.

Historia
Titus Crown is the first Black sheriff in the history of Charon County, Virginia. In recent decades, quiet Charon has had only two murders. But after years of working as an FBI agent, Titus knows better than anyone that while his hometown might seem like a land of moonshine, cornbread, and honeysuckle, secrets always fester under the surface. Then a year to the day after Titus’s election, a school teacher is killed by a former student and the student is fatally shot by Titus’s deputies. As Titus investigates the shootings, he unearths terrible crimes.

Master Storytelling
Revisado: 10-15-23
Adam Lazarre-White is a masterful narrator that captures the personality and tone of the characters, but this is especially true for our lead protagonist, Titus. Cosby’s ability to weave a story that keeps you leaning forward for the next step in Titus’s investigation; pure magnificent.

Historia
Kiara and her brother, Marcus, are barely scraping by in a squalid East Oakland apartment complex optimistically called the Regal-Hi. Both have dropped out of high school, their family fractured by death and prison. But while Marcus clings to his dream of rap stardom, Kiara hunts for work to pay their rent—which has more than doubled—and to keep the nine-year-old boy next door, abandoned by his mother, safe and fed.

Objectifies
Revisado: 05-24-23
Excellent story telling that is an unfortunate reality for far too many black and brown girls. Black women often shoulder society’s burdens that diminishes them to objects and not actual human beings worthy of love. Bravo Leila Mottley! An excellent debut. I can’t wait to see what you do next. I see you!

Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Journey
Revisado: 05-08-23
What a ride! Demon’s journey through life was definitely no rose garden, and would have otherwise been heart breaking and gut wrenching, but the quick witty narrative woven by the author kept humor in play even during the most horrible experiences. This was one of the best listens I’ve had on audible. Do yourself a favor and join Demon and a colorful cast of characters for one helluva tale.

Revisado: 02-27-22
This was an excellent narration of Ras Baraka’s journey. The road to where we ultimately may end up is full of peaks, valleys, and hair-pin turns. Each of these obstacles seemingly like some cruel fate in real time, leads us to become the best person that’s buried underneath the rubble in our soul. Well done Mr Baraka.

Growth in Life & Music
Revisado: 07-11-21
I’ve been a long time fan of The Roots. In fact, I’ve seen them live six times, and each show presented something new. Something fresh. Listening to this audiobook, and hearing Tariq narrate his life, I recognize that the complete new feel I got watching those live Roots shows over two decades was due both to his wholistic growth as a person so hearing insight to that journey was amazing. His narration was honest and heartfelt, and pulls the listener into his space. I only wish it was longer. Tariq has embodied hip-hop as a culture, and continues to propel it forward. Many thanks for adding yet another layer to the culture with this audiobook.
