Historia
A ghost in his deserted childhood home in Virginia, Tom Smiley can’t forget the bloody war and its meaningless losses, nor can he shed his revulsion for his role in the Confederate defense of slavery. A fascinating tale
Revisado: 03-18-25
This story is told through the memories of a ghost. Very well written. The author must have researched life in that time diligently. The only thing I would have liked to see was more detail of the main character's life after war, and more of his descendants. The bulk of the story details the war and becomes heavy and nearly hopeless.
This is a cautionary tale. All war is bad but this one never should have happened. If I were a teacher or professor, I would assign this as required reading. The other caution is to not be so quick to dismiss remnants of actual people. Preserve letters, etc. and listen to your elders.
The narrator was excellent.

Historia
In The Worst of You, just-wed architects Timo and Nia flee a murder scene, setting in motion a chain reaction of lies and betrayals that threaten to unravel everything they have built together. Twisted and propulsive, this thriller is told from the alternating perspectives of the couple and those close to them on Williwaw Island, each with their own motive to use the outcome of the murder case to their advantage. When a huge storm sweeps up the coast, trapping everyone on tiny Williwaw Island, it’s a race against time—and the elements — to stop the murderer from striking again.

Interesting story with several moving parts. I didn't care for some of the characters and was confused at times as to why anyone else did. Don't miss the epilogue because the end is a mess.

At 24 Amy was a typical type-A law student: smart, driven, and highly competitive. With a full course load and a budding romance, it seemed nothing could slow her down...until her heart began to fail. Amy chronicles her harrowing medical journey from the first misdiagnosis to her astonishing recovery, which is made all the more dramatic by the romantic bedside courtship with her future husband and her uncompromising desire to become a mother.

Mixed feelings
Revisado: 09-23-23
First, I really am sorry to hear that the author did lose her life recently, to something common in transplant patients.
Her railing against what has happened to her is honest but she comes across as such a thoroughly unpleasant person, it's difficult to have sympathy. She has had a rich life and seems unaware of it. I have a sneaky suspicion that she was and would have been unpleasant even without the transplant. Even her father, who loved and supported her, bailed on her momentarily due to her behavior. The medical profession is not perfect but her disrespect is so shocking, I couldn't tell if she was serious or yanking our chains. With all that said, a lot of readers will find value here. The narrator was very good.

Food for thought
Revisado: 08-17-23
This was hard to put down. There is a lot to chew on and making medical decisions touches most of us. For reference, my background is in the medical field AND my family nearly lost a child, and still could. This story all came down to one thing: the mother plunged the entire family into hell for years. Letting a loved one go is soul shattering. But as the father said, loving them also means you don't want them to continue to suffer. These are things everyone should think about in advance.
I liked that the author drew attention to the work of service dogs, and how clueless people can be about it.
I found the ending to be a sort of karma - a be careful what you ask for moment. I'd like to see an alternate ending - one that doesn't add the happiness.

Historia
The Reservoir follows an unexceptional man in an exceptional time. We see our present-day pandemic world and New York City through the eyes of a former Wall Street veteran, Ridley, as he, in his enforced quarantined solitude, looks back upon his life. He examines his wins, his failures, the gnawing questions - his career, his divorce, his estranged daughter - and questions what it all means and who he really was.

Good Intentions Line the Way to Hell
Revisado: 01-20-23
Via Audible: I liked the narrator and I'm picky about it.
I enjoyed this well written book. Unique story. I didn't particularly care for the ending. For one thing, it was too long.
Spoilers:
I was disappointed with the identity of the killer. No wonder everyone wanted the main character to back off.
I hate it when intelligent people do stupid things. Not only did the main character put herself in danger by going there on her own, it's amazing that she made it through the blizzard. Just dumb.

Too long getting to the point
Revisado: 10-08-22
The narrator was fine but I have problems with the story.
Jumping back to the past was more interesting than the present day murder, but it took way too long to get to anything relevant. I also have problems with so many books nowadays using the mental health of young women as the basis. This is the third one I've come across in two weeks. The main character seemed more flaky and stupid than suffering from mental issues. Which leads me to another complaint. What were the qualifications for this girl to become an admin for an exec at a posh company?
Except for her, the characters are well written and often surprising. I could visualize the settings and the weather. Well done on that score - many authors lack that skill.
