Historia
The Anarchy tells the remarkable story of how one of the world’s most magnificent empires disintegrated and came to be replaced by a dangerously unregulated private company, based thousands of miles overseas in one small office, five windows wide, and answerable only to its distant shareholders. In his most ambitious and riveting audiobook to date, William Dalrymple tells the story of the East India Company as it has never been told before, unfolding a timely cautionary tale of the first global corporate power.

Engaging and eye opening account of a time and place my education had missed altogether. The reader butchered most foreign names and had trouble with some common English words.

Earnest and boring

I could only listen for a couple of hours before I gave up. It wasn’t entertaining, or exciting. I didn’t learn anything from it. The reader made all the women sound sweet and the men sound pompous, whatever the context.

Childish, but not in a good way
Revisado: 08-25-23
I was reminded of stories I had written in grade school, enthusiastic but uninteresting flights of fancy unmoored in reality. Even the syntax was childish.

Historia
According to the accepted narrative of progress, humans have thrived thanks to their brains and brawn, collectively bending the arc of history. But in this revelatory book, Professor Jonathan Kennedy argues that the myth of human exceptionalism overstates the role that we play in social and political change. Instead, it is the humble microbe that wins wars and topples empires.

Sweeping but suspect
Revisado: 07-01-23
A grand history of mankind focused on the role of infectious disease. I learned a lot, but am not sure how much of it to trust. The author is sometimes detailed and careful about supporting his arguments, but sometimes slips in conclusions with little more than assertion and slight of hand. The closer he gets to modern times, the more preachy and sanctimonious he gets.

Historia
Afghanistan, a landlocked country in Central Asia, has improbably been at the center of international geopolitics for four decades. After the Soviet Union invaded in 1980, Afghanistan descended into an unending conflict that featured at various points most of the world's major powers. In Afghanistan: What Everyone Needs to Know, leading scholar Barnett R. Rubin provides an overview of this complicated nation. After providing a concise history of Afghanistan, he explores the various peoples and cultures of the country and its relations with neighbors like Pakistan and Iran.

Rubin knows the history and people from up close. The reader is awful. Where Rubin is witty and fun, the reader is pompous and tiresome. His mispronunciation is distracting.

Historia
Ben Franklin's own lively story of his early years is a unique, fascinating, and influential look at this American founding father. It has been taught in schools as a moral tract, as a guide to self-improvement, and as the Great American Success Story. It also is relished both for its insight into colonial life and the mind of the man who most affected the development of our democratic form of government.
