Historia
Around 950,000 years ago, a family of five walked along the beach and left behind the oldest family footprints ever discovered. For award-winning historian Simon Sebag Montefiore, these poignant, familiar fossils serve as an inspiration for a new kind of world history, one that is genuinely global, spans all eras and all continents, and focuses on the family ties that connect every one of us. In this epic, ever-surprising book, Montefiore chronicles the world’s great dynasties across human history to the people at the heart of the human drama.

Giving two stars because I appreciate the attempt at covering more cultures than most books. I am used to history books covering the awful ways that people tortured and killed one another many centuries or millennia ago, and offering details about people's sex lives that are somewhat shocking today. But this book goes farther than any other. I could only listen to about 20% of it before I'd had enough. There really is no need to go into such detail about methods of killing people or precisely what was done while raping underage slaves. Just gross.
Also, some of the narrators are terrible. They can't pronounce common words or they recite the text in a sing-song voice that is irritating.

Historia
When the once-mighty city of Rome was sacked by barbarians in 410 and lay in ruins, it signaled the end of an era—and the beginning of a thousand years of profound transformation. In a gripping narrative bursting with big names—from St Augustine and Attila the Hun to the Prophet Muhammad and Eleanor of Aquitaine—Dan Jones charges through the history of the Middle Ages. Powers and Thrones takes listeners on a journey through an emerging Europe, the great capitals of late Antiquity, as well as the influential cities of the Islamic West.

Wide ranging and informative

I really enjoyed this book. Its breadth and depth kept me entertained and fascinated. I have listened to many audiobooks and lectures on the middle ages, but this one really went into detail on a lot of topics that the others gloss over. Very educational. Some of these chapters should be adapted for TV! Also, the narration was very pleasant and easy to listen to.

A Rare Disappointment from The Great Courses

Interesting approach, weird delivery
Revisado: 06-27-23
I like the overview of the Middle Ages as it occurred throughout the world. Obviously there can't be too much detail when you have such a wide scope.
It would be much better if it were narrated by the person that wrote it though. Other courses sound like you're listening to a professor give a lecture, but this woman's odd phrasing and intonation make it sound like she's delivering the evening news. It's harder to retain much information when it's delivered this way.

Look beyond the abstract dates and figures, kings and queens, and battles and wars that make up so many historical accounts. Over the course of 48 richly detailed lectures, Professor Garland covers the breadth and depth of human history from the perspective of the so-called ordinary people, from its earliest beginnings through the Middle Ages.

Full of info you just don't get anywhere else! I thought I knew a decent bit about these civilizations, but this course gave me a new appreciation and understanding of what it was like to live at that time.

Best credit I've spent!
Revisado: 02-21-23
This course was so entertaining and useful! Anyone can benefit from this, whether you are traveling or not. The information you learn can even be useful in interacting with people who were born and raised in the same culture you were. Differences in how people view the world and what they value pop up all the time, and the key to navigating these is understanding where it comes from. Loved this course.

Historia
At the dawn of the last millennium in the year 1000, Europe was one of the world's more stagnant regions-an economically undeveloped, intellectually derivative, and geopolitically passive backwater, with illiteracy, starvation, and disease the norm for almost everyone. Yet only three centuries later, all of this had changed.

Sigh. Pretty good, I guess.
Revisado: 01-18-23
The content was great, but the narrator's frequent sighing was annoying. The last lecture was pretty unnecessary, though, and was obviously added as filler.
