Historia
Computers have changed since 1981, when Tracy Kidder memorably recorded the drama, comedy, and excitement of one company's efforts to bring a new microcomputer to market. What has not changed is the feverish pace of the high-tech industry, the go-for-broke approach to business that has caused so many computer companies to win big (or go belly up), and the cult of pursuing mind-bending technological innovations.

Creative work doesn't come with a guarantee. But there is a pattern to who succeeds and who doesn't. And engaging in the consistent practice of its pursuit is the best way forward. Based on the breakthrough Akimbo workshop pioneered by legendary author Seth Godin, The Practice will help you get unstuck and find the courage to make and share creative work. Godin insists that writer's block is a myth, that consistency is far more important than authenticity, and that experiencing the imposter syndrome is a sign that you're a well-adjusted human.

A series of inspirational tweets, unrelated to each other
Revisado: 03-23-25
I like Seth Godin a lot, enjoyed his other books, expected similar here. But instead, this is a series of inspirational thoughts for creators. Which is great if that is what you were looking for. But I come to books for thorough thoughtful building ideas.
I recommend the war of art by Steven Pressfield (which is referenced in this book) as a much better version. Pressfield tells more personal stories which make more sense and build on each other.

Historia
The Hiltons is a sweeping saga of the success-and excess-of an iconic American family. Demanding and enigmatic, patriarch Conrad Hilton's visionary ideas and unyielding will established the model for the modern luxury hotel industry. But outside the boardroom, Conrad struggled with emotional detachment, failed marriages, and conflicted Catholicism.

More lovemaking than business
Revisado: 12-09-24
I just finished Marriott’s “success is never final”. It is about how the Marriott hotel Empire was built and came to be number one by far.
So I thought I would check out the Hilton side of the story, Sadly the author seems to care more about details of lovemaking and who is getting spurned then how Conrad built the Empire, the children expanded it, and the difficult choices they faced.
In fairness, it wasn’t presented as a business book.
I had hoped given how long it was it would include the business stuff along with the personal stuff. But more time is spent on Nikki and his numerous romantic conquests and addictions than why they decided to sell the international hotels he was in charge of.

In its heyday, Bell Labs boasted nearly 15,000 employees, 1200 of whom held PhDs and 13 of whom won Nobel Prizes. Thriving in a work environment that embraced new ideas, Bell Labs scientists introduced concepts that still propel many of today’s most exciting technologies.

Slow wrong voice for an otherwise fine story
Revisado: 09-17-24
It is good and detailed, but I found Walter Isaacson’s the innovators much better.
The narrator reads it with a theatre voice instead of a non-fiction voice.

When Lynsi Snyder’s grandparents founded In-N-Out Burger in 1948, they built it with a passion for quality and service that Lynsi embraced at a young age. After starting as a store associate at age seventeen, she then worked in other departments, gaining firsthand experience with almost every aspect of the family business until she became president in 2010. She has led the company through explosive growth—today, there are three-hundred-ninety-two stores and counting—and is deeply committed to the well-being of the In-N-Out Burger family.

Puff piece with no details about biz
Revisado: 07-09-24
First chapter was good, but down hill from there. I don’t need to hear for the hundredth time you ONLY use the freshest ingredients, and terrible as it is I’m not here to hear how substances and abuse affected the family. Or a run down of collector cups.
What I was hoping for was how the decision is made to build a new distribution centre in a new territory. How you deal with aggressive competitors like Mc D and BK. Why leave California for Colorado? What challenges are there in running a private family company vs public or with investors. Why only promote from within but not at the exec level?
What makes a person in and out material at exec level?
Lessons learned?
How much does the 20 event food trucks gross vs store sales? Seems like a big expense for little return.
Sadly this book is written by someone who took over seemingly after all the big decisions were made.
Stay the course and drag race seems to be her motto.

Historia
Forty years ago Israeli psychologists Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky wrote a series of breathtakingly original studies undoing our assumptions about the decision-making process. Their papers showed the ways in which the human mind erred systematically when forced to make judgments about uncertain situations. Their work created the field of behavioral economics, revolutionized Big Data studies, advanced evidence-based medicine, led to a new approach to government regulation, and made Michael Lewis' work possible.

Lewis’ Weakest Work
Revisado: 03-31-23
Goes into far greater detail than any other Lewis book and lacks the poignancy and humor. Half of the details could be thrown out and the story/points are the same. Do I really need to know he called on his secretaries phone? Or how many parties Danny attended? Or he kept his paratrooper uniform in a trunk in the closet? Or the duo were interviewed for an unpublished book?
Feels like he didn’t have enough broad material so doubled down on what he had: every excruciating detail of Danny and Amos.
What it has to do with basketball drafts it starts with I don’t know.

Historia
The tsunami of cheap credit that rolled across the planet between 2002 and 2008 was more than a simple financial phenomenon: it was temptation, offering entire societies the chance to reveal aspects of their characters they could not normally afford to indulge. The Greeks wanted to turn their country into a pinata stuffed with cash and allow as many citizens as possible to take a whack at it. The Germans wanted to be even more German; the Irish wanted to stop being Irish.

Historia
Stan Lee was one of the most famous and beloved entertainers to emerge from the twentieth century. He served as head editor of Marvel Comics for three decades and, in that time, became known as the creator of more pieces of internationally recognizable intellectual property than nearly anyone: Spider-Man, the Avengers, the X-Men, Black Panther, the Incredible Hulk . . . the list goes on. His carnival-barker marketing prowess helped save the comic-book industry and superhero fiction.

Not the heroic story of Marvel but of a huckster
Revisado: 07-14-21
Stan Lee created an amazing fictional character: himself. Stan left Marvel in the 70s and never looked back, nor was involved in anything creatively interesting again. This proves his talent was in marketing the gifts of others (Kirby) and self promotion.
If you want to hear the amazing story of Marvel and how it went from bankruptcy to top Hollywood studio read Slugfest.
This book is about a sad , cowardly, old man.

Better than expected. Just like the iPhone
Revisado: 06-21-19
I’m in tech and thought a history of the iPhone would be interesting. I was wrong. It was absolutely amazing. I really liked how the author followed all the disparate innovations, separately and thoroughly, to this one singular moment. Reads like a thriller.
