Historia
Aaron Fortin is new in town. He drives a brand-new Acura—a gift from his parents for uprooting him in the middle of senior year. Showing up on his first day at the local public school in that nice of a car? He knows he’ll never blend in, and he doesn’t care to try. The car, the new-kid mystique, he can use all that.... Crystal Giordano carpools to the same school in her friend Trevor’s beat-up van. In the van along with Crystal and Trevor are Paul, Harmony, and Gayle. Crystal’s technically part of their misfit group, but most of the time, she feels like she’s the only one who doesn’t fit.

Total mind pollution
Revisado: 11-19-23
I tried it because it was free. Figured maybe it would have something to make it worth the listen: good dialogue, interesting character development, good storytelling…something.
Nah, don’t waste your time. It’s utter garbage. Pure paranoia porn.
I have no opinion of the narrators. I only rated the narration because it was required before writing a review. The writing was so devoid of any redeeming qualities that the narrators could only be fairly judged if given better material.
After finding the beginning to be a form of slow torture, I forced myself to listen to the ending and to spot-check here and there. To be fair.
Trust me, unless you actually enjoy trumped up violent paranoid fantasies masquerading as entertainment, it’s worth negative amounts of your time. (If someone tried to get you to read it, it’d be worth taking the time to get away from them…)
I’d pay good money to un-hear it.

Unrelenting violence and gore
Revisado: 07-21-18
At first I thought the storytelling might give the book some promise. I had realized, of course, that the tale would have a violent aspect to it; while bloodshed and gore do not appeal to me, I have often put up with those parts for the sake of an otherwise well-written (and well-performed) story. Given the number of audiobooks I go through, I’ve learned to make such compromises.
Unfortunately, as the book progressed it became so unceasingly bloody and dark that I couldn’t stand to listen through the darkness, blood and gore to get to the plot points.(Which, in the end, seemed more as if they were simply there to motivate the violence than for the purposes any more interesting development.)
I ended up skipping to the end, just to get some idea of whether the book turned a better corner, before deciding to return it.
If you like violent stories with simplistic motivations, this may be a great pick for you. If your preferences are more similar to mine, you’ll be better off looking elsewhere.

Historia
For 20 years, the Palomas and the Corbeaus have been rivals and enemies, locked in an escalating feud for over a generation. Both families make their living as traveling performers in competing shows - the Palomas swimming in mermaid exhibitions, the Corbeaus, former tightrope walkers, performing in the tallest trees they can find. Lace Paloma may be new to her family's show, but she knows as well as anyone that the Corbeaus are pure magia negra - black magic from the devil himself.

A gem of a book
Revisado: 11-23-15
What did you love best about The Weight of Feathers?
So many things; I may need to come back and add to this review when I have more time! For now:
The story drew me in right from the start, and never let me go.
The touches of magical realism are light and beautiful, accentuating the whole without overwhelming the story, and leaving me with beautiful and novel imagery to enjoy long after the story is done.
Lace and Cluck's characters and actions were believable, and I could hardly imagine anyone not caring about them. Their relationship developed in a way which allowed me to believe in their love, and root for them.
The language and dialog are beautiful and moving, yet unaffected and believable -- there is nothing labored or self-conscious about Ms. McLemore's style.
I loved the touches of Spanish and French, and the ways in which these things are part of the flavor of each of the two families.

Any additional comments?
The world imagined by Frances Hardinge, for Fly by Night, is one of the most fresh and original I've encountered, and yet believable and thoroughly engaging. I love the complexity of the characters and themes, leavened throughout by Hardinge's dry wit. The plot and character twists were well-developed; they had a surprise element and at the same time made so much sense that in the end they seemed inevitable by virtue of character development, though never quite predictable.Though devoid of saccharine elements, the story ripened into a kind of believable yet never cloying sweetness, as the characters learned and grew.
