Historia
Let's be honest - nobody has more fun than atheists. Don’t believe it? Well, consider this: For nonbelievers, every day you’re alive is a day to celebrate! And no one celebrates life to the fullest like Penn Jillette - the larger, louder half of legendary magic duo Penn & Teller - whose spectacularly witty and sharply observant essays in Every Day Is an Atheist Holiday! will entertain zealots and skeptics alike.

Would you try another book from Penn Jillette and/or Penn Jillette?
Possibly
Would you ever listen to anything by Penn Jillette again?
Meh.
Have you listened to any of Penn Jillette’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
First, although I am familiar with him as a performer.
Do you think Every Day is an Atheist Holiday! needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
Kind of a rambling, incohesive group of essays ... So a sequel could only be more of the same.
Any additional comments?
If you're already a fan, you are used to Penn's squeaky, rushed, loud voice. If you've heard his rants before, this will be familiar, although boring at times. If you're looking for much connected to the TITLE, you'll be disappointed.

Historia
Scientology, created in 1954 by a prolific sci-fi writer named L. Ron Hubbard, claims to be the world's fastest-growing religion, with millions of members around the world and huge financial holdings. Its celebrity believers keep its profile high, and its teams of "volunteer ministers" offer aid at disaster sites such as Haiti and the World Trade Center. But Scientology is also a notably closed faith, harassing journalists and others through litigation and intimidation, even infiltrating the highest levels of government to further its goals.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Unlike another reviewer, I wasn't bothered by the completely one-sided treatment of scientology. I expected that. I also learned many new things about the subject. I'm not sure that the book translates well to audio format, purely based on the bizarre nature of the text; lots of players, lots of moving parts, a timeline to keep in focus. I came away going, wow, that's weirder than I thought but retained little because ofthe density of facts.
What did you like best about this story?
I think the narrator did a good job, despite the text.
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
Not sure about this... Not really a plot-driven tale!
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
No

Historia
Do your kids think that clean, folded clothes magically appear in their drawers? Do they roll their eyes when you suggest they clean the bathroom? Do you think it's your job to pave their road to success? As parents, so often we hover, race in to save, and do everything we can for our kids - unintentionally reinforcing their belief that the world revolves around them. When Kay Wyma realized that an attitude of entitlement had crept into her home, this mother of five got some attitude of her own.

What did you love best about Cleaning House?
I chose it to read because I'm on a 12-months of "xyz"-kick right now ... but as a mother of young children, I bump up against this entitlement stuph on a regular basis. I found myself shouting YES!! to her philosophy and statements (after admitting to the error of her ways prior to the project) and cheering her and her family on throughout the book. I feel so strongly about the points and quality of this book that I am purchasing it for every member (40!) of my Mothers of PreSchoolers group this year!
What was one of the most memorable moments of Cleaning House?
when she recounts a friend's son putting in a sprinkler system himself (including research and purchasing), and when she had one (clueless) kid pump gas ...
Which scene was your favorite?
there are 12 categories - I think my favorite 'scenes' are when she explains the different ways her different-personaly-ed crew handled the challenges.
What’s an idea from the book that you will remember?
give kids the tools, and step back. self-esteem is created when you give them the opportunities to succeed (and sometimes fail), not when you pave the way, fix the results, or prevent failure/experience altogether!

Historia
The smudge looked suspicious. The doctor confirmed: "That's the baby's penis!" Joel's reaction? Pure panic. "I pictured having to go camping and fix a car and use a hammer and throw a football and watch professionals throw footballs and figure out whether to be sad or happy about the results of said football throwing." And so begins Joel's quest to confront his effete nature whether he likes it or not (he doesn't), by doing a 24-hour shift with LA firefighters, going hunting, rebuilding a house, and engaging in all sorts of other manly activities.

Is there anything you would change about this book?
I think the author has a delivery which is better read than spoken. He knows he's funny, so he rushes through the funny lines .. they would be more effective in print than voice, or perhaps narrated by someone else.
Would you be willing to try another book from Joel Stein? Why or why not?
Yes - I enjoyed the topic and the story.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Joel Stein?
Not terrible, so if his material was only available read by the author, I would consider it.
Did Man Made inspire you to do anything?
no
Any additional comments?
I enjoyed the book on the whole. I was a little disappointed with some of the lewd points of view of the author, but then again, that's real, that's him, so ... I wasn't offended just wasn't anticipating that type of commentary. (I suppose there was an assumption on my part that sex-talk wasn't going to enter into a book about what the author wanted to impart to his pre-born son). Anyway, decent "read".
