Historia
Glowing with narrator Virginia Leishman’s finely tuned phrasing, The Djinn in the Nightingale’s Eye is the perfect introduction to A.S. Byatt, an author who continues to receive international awards and acclaim. Her wondrous fairy tales are iridescent stories full of spells, marvelous creatures, and beautiful princesses.

I didn't get it
Revisado: 08-03-21
I very much enjoyed another A. S. Ayatt's book of short stories, The Matisse Stories, so I was looking forward to this but these are fairy tales without a form. I can't see what the author is getting at. There are imaginative images and interesting characters but no moral or value underpinning that I would expect to find in a fairy tale; at least I couldn't find it. The first is light and sort of fun; but what's the point? The second is dark - love gone wrong; coming to the dance too late. And I stopped there.

Tom Bodett goes long on the short story
Revisado: 01-02-18
I enjoyed this audible book immensely. Each chapter is like a short story but the author weaves the stories together in the most magical way to create a longer tale. Bodett’s Reading is magical also; The timing and intonation bring out the poignancy of each scene. He doesn’t tell us what the characters are feeling but rather gives us a vivid handle on there on their inner life by his pristine description of their actions and the setting. The plot is full of improbable coincidences but we are happy to go along. He avoids the neat ribbon that ties all the stories together, yet we have a feeling at the end that it all makes sense. I recommended strongly as a listen, and I’m left wondering if it is as superb without Tom providing the voices.

Stephen King, the master storyteller, weaves the utterly fantastic with the totally believable . . . Because you want to believe: time travel, inhabiting bodies, a soul's quest, cops and robbers and drugs . . In a story of four wonderful and unforgettable characters. Masterfully performed.
