It is 1985 in a small Irish town. During the weeks leading up to Christmas, Bill Furlong, a coal merchant and family man, faces into his busiest season. Early one morning, while delivering an order to the local convent, Bill makes a discovery that forces him to confront both his past and the complicit silences of a town controlled by the church.

A Gem of a Novel
Revisado: 12-01-24
A beautifully written story of love, sacrifice, systemic evil, grace, and courage set in Ireland, 1985. Excellent narrator. I read the book, then listened to it on Audible. Now I look forward to seeing the movie. This is a story with many facets, sharp and shining. I'm grateful to be able to take it in and reflect on it through each of these mediums. I love Claire Keegan's book _Foster_, and the movie based on it, "The Quiet Girl." I look forward to reading more of Keegan's powerful, riveting books.

Great character-driven story with outstanding narration. As the main character, Luzia, takes risks and faces dangers to reach toward her heart's desire, her true nature is revealed--her inner power, her strength of will, and her brilliance. I look forward to reading more of Leigh Bardugo's novels.

Historia
Twelve-year-old Douglas Spaulding knows Green Town, Illinois, is as vast and deep as the whole wide world that lies beyond the city limits. It is a pair of brand-new tennis shoes, the first harvest of dandelions for Grandfather's renowned intoxicant, the distant clang of the trolley's bell on a hazy afternoon. It is yesteryear and tomorrow blended into an unforgettable always. But as young Douglas is about to discover, summer can be more than the repetition of established rituals whose mystical power holds time at bay.

A Poetic Celebration of One Summer--Life & Death, Dark & Light, Joy & Terror--in a Small Midwest Town
Revisado: 09-13-24
I loved being transported to this boyhood summer of 1926 and getting to know the characters in the small town. The sensory details made me feel I was there--in the steamy heat, listening to the cicadas, rocking on the front porch swing, sipping ice-cold lemonade. I laughed, cried, and drank in this fine Dandelion Wine deeply. Douglas Spaulding is a fictitious Ray Bradbury, and it's a gift to watch the young boy, who will become a great writer, grabbing his nickel notepad and yellow Ticonderoga pencil to make lists, to turn his keen eye on his neighbors and tree-lined neighborhood, to wake us up to the wonder of being fully alive in each moment.

I liked how Linus Baker's rigid, grey, rules & regulations life slowly transformed into a heart-centered, colorful world of infinite possibility and wonder. The narrator did a terrific job with all the characters. I can't wait to listen to TJ Klune's next book.

Historia
It’s not just you. Stress levels are at an all-time high—so much so that a recently convened panel of medical experts in the US has recommended that all adults under the age of 65 be screened for anxiety. In How to Release Anxiety, Gabby Bernstein offers simple, actionable steps for feeling better, living with more ease, and showing up for those around us. Gabby’s unusual advice: Rather than manage your anxiety, what if you befriended it? Gabby posits that what we befriend, we can ultimately be at ease with. So she invites us to get curious.

Grateful I found you, Gabby
Revisado: 07-31-24
Last night, our only daughter and 5-year-old grandson were flying home to Sweden after his first visit to the US. I went to bed with anxiety, finally fell asleep, then woke in the middle of the night with anxiety, checked my phone, but no word yet. So I looked for something to calm me, and I found Gabby Bernstein's "How to Release Anxiety" on Audible Plus. I listened, I befriended my anxiety, located it in my body, asked it what it needed, did the easy, effective calming techniques along with Gabby and the audience, then took out my ear buds, turned off my phone, and fell into a deep sleep. When I woke, I got the message that our daughter and grandson are home. So grateful I found you, Gabby. These techniques and this mindset of befriending anxiety are now added to my anxiety tool kit. I plan to use them when needed (daily) and share them with others through my calm, loving, peaceful, attentive, listening presence and by sharing the simple techniques when appropriate with others who are open and may benefit. Namaste.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

A Novel that Hooks Your Heart
Revisado: 07-31-24
I loved so much about this book. First, I loved the main characters--Tova, Marcellus the Octopus, Cameron, and Ethan. All of them are three-dimensional, complex characters who have survived in spite of deep, heartbreaking losses. Second, I loved the story with all its plot twists and turns that kept me listening. Third, I loved the setting and the beautiful descriptions of nature. Finally, I loved the two stellar narrators. Great job on all the voices. Now I look forward to discussing the book at an upcoming cabin getaway with old college teammates.

Thank you and deep bows to Kate Mulgrew for this brilliantly written and narrated end-of-life family portrait. What an incredible tribute to your parents--both strong, spirited, flawed, authentic--and to your family, created family--Lucy & Javier--and dear friends. Deeply human and humane, this book is one I recommend highly for all readers who seek insight and support as they navigate this final, sacred stretch of life with those they love.

Historia
Many famed music producers are known for a particular sound that has its day. Rick Rubin is known for something else: creating a space where artists of all different genres and traditions can home in on who they really are and what they really offer. He has made a practice of helping people transcend their self-imposed expectations in order to reconnect with a state of innocence from which the surprising becomes inevitable. Over the years, he has learned that being an artist isn’t about your specific output, it’s about your relationship to the world.

A Cosmic & Practical Guide for the Artist's Path
Revisado: 03-22-24
Rick Rubin walks his talk. He talks about creating balance in artistic work of all kinds, and in this book, he balances the cosmic and practical aspects of the artist's path. He talks about how the artist must have a brutal editor who pares an artistic work to its essence. In this concise book, there is no fat or filler, just substance. Rubin's narration is clear, well paced, and crisp. He makes a point related to art, and then he gives strong, concrete examples. A writer friend recommended this book to me, and I'll be recommending it to artists of all types--writers, musicians, visual artists, dancers, and others. I'll be listening to this book again because there's so much rich material here whether you're a young artist or an older writer, such as myself. Always more to take in, reflect, make changes in our artistic process and craft, to come into closer alignment with the cosmic forces that drew us onto the artist's path.

As one of the few witches in Britain, Mika Moon knows she has to hide her magic, keep her head down, and stay away from other witches so their powers don’t mingle and draw attention. And as an orphan who lost her parents at a young age and was raised by strangers, she’s used to being alone and she follows the rules...with one exception: an online account, where she posts videos "pretending" to be a witch. She thinks no one will take it seriously.

Historia
Kenan Thompson is Saturday Night Live’s longest-ever-serving cast member and a star of such pioneering sketches as “Black Jeopardy” and is hugely beloved thanks to a tidal wave of nostalgic fans who grew up on early 2000s classics All That, Good Burger, and Kenan & Kel on Nickelodeon. He’s also a dad (to two girls) in his mid-40s living in suburbia, and whose universal, relatable, family-friendly humor has created unbelievable appeal and engagement from fans from middle America to coastal elites. Becoming a dad sucked the cool right out of him—and he's OK with that!
