Historia
Over 13,000 years ago, Britain emerged from the ravages of the Ice Age as a changed land. Mesolithic hunter-gatherers who had adapted to cold climates were presented with new opportunities by the retreating glaciers that could transform the way they lived. But what do we actually know about these people? What can the archeology tell us about Britain after the Ice Age?In this episode of The Ancients Tristan Hughes is joined by archeologists Dr Nick Overton and Dr Barry Taylor to talk about the discovery of Mesolithic artefacts at Star Carr - the site of a prehistoric lake settlement in North ...

Fascinating story
Revisado: 04-11-24
This was the best episode I’ve listened to. The archeologists were so enthusiastic about the subject and did a great job of sharing their information. There was no interrupting of each other or repetition.

Gold and horses! Few ancient civilisations were greater masters of metalworking and horse riding than the Saka culture of Central Asia. Also known as the ‘Eastern Scythians’, these peoples ruled over a large area of the Great Steppe more than 2,000 years ago. And recently, new archaeological initiatives in Kazakhstan have started to reveal so much more about these horse lords and their way of life. Great burial mounds have been excavated, revealing a wealth of extraordinary artefacts. From golden sword scabbards to richly-decorated horse gear, it’s fascinating evidence of the ...

Such a snappy beginning

Basically loved it, but it slowed quite a bit and the last third of the book was unnecessarily repetitive.

Couldn’t listen
Revisado: 06-12-23
The author claims this is a drama-free book, but almost every paragraph is infused with drama. Dramatic yelling and complaining and dumb decisions abound. The story line is completely contrived, which is sometimes ok in a romance novel if it’s handled well, but this is not. The so-called humor is not remotely funny. And I have a bit of a potty mouth myself, but using the eff word or a variation of same constantly is just a sign of poor writing. I was stuck in my car, and this was my only downloaded book, so I listened to over half of it. Bad, bad, unbelievably bad.

Construction worker Russell Hart has been head-over-work boots for Abby Sullivan since the moment he laid eyes on her. But he knows a classy, uptown virgin like her could never be truly happy with a rough, blue-collar guy like him. If only she'd stop treating him like her personal hero - a role he craves more than oxygen - maybe he could accept it.

Three hours could have been cut
Revisado: 10-13-22
Way too many interior monologues. It would have been better at least three hours shorter. I liked the hero, but I got tired of the heroine’s “I’m so incompetent “ routine.
As for voices, his was pretty good except when he tried to go female. And you would think that Hispanic characters would be better served by a narrator who could do the accent. She was awful!

Is there a plot here?
Revisado: 06-22-22
It's never good when the conflict in a book could be solved with one conversation. A premise as tired as this one needs something to make you care about the characters, but these two are flat and uninteresting. The female narrator sounds like she's twelve and brings whine to a new level. While I love a British accent, the male narrator sounds like he's at least fifty. Thank goodness I didn't use a credit for this.

Historia
What a disaster! I only just made my flight to New York to help my uncle, and the phone I'm holding is not mine! It seems to belong to some commitment-phobic serial dater who's never made it past four dates (according to the constant notifications he's getting from his fake dating profile).... And worse? I have a sinking feeling it's that hot suit-monkey with the arctic grey eyes I just had a run-in with at the airport. Somehow, I have to persuade him not to get a new phone until I get back. My whole life is on that phone. I knew I should have backed it up. It's only a few days. Surely, we can handle it.

Could not root for this heroine
Revisado: 01-05-22
I felt like I spent at least five hours of this listening to the heroine whine. By the end, I wanted to send the hero for counseling. Why would he fall for someone who has such a nasty opinion of him? Someone who won't listen to him? Who thinks he's a sexual scuzz-bucket based on the fact that he has a lot of dating apps? H and h both had traumatic childhoods, but the story does not give any insight into hers that would justify the way she acts. Parts of the book were very funny, and I liked the story of the hero's family, but I see no happily ever after for this couple.

Surpassed my expectations.
Revisado: 05-22-19
Naomi Novik did an unbelievable job of pulling me into this story. Between her writing and Lisa Flanagan's narration, I felt as if I were hiding behind one of the magical trees watching the events unfold. Seldom have I had such a visceral reaction to a book. The ending was very satisfactory; I hate books where characters are left dangling. Everyone I'd grown to care about was taken care of, even if not always in the happiest of ways. The narration belonged with the story. It's as if the author and narrator came together as one to create the book.

Most perfect author and narrator combo ever
Revisado: 07-26-18
I seldom write reviews, but this audio book experience was exceptional. The author wove her plot with skill and attention to detail, tying the characters' stories together perfectly. Ms. Potter proved equal to the writing with her narration, getting every nuance of accent and personality. My only quibble might be that the character of Sharkey was voiced a bit tritely, but otherwise she was flawless. It's been a while since I listened to a book that kept me in the car after I reached my destination, but this one did in 108 degree weather.
