Historia
In the rugged Pacific Northwest lies the Olympic National Forest - nearly a million acres of impenetrable darkness and impossible beauty. From deep within this old growth forest, a six-year-old girl appears. Speechless and alone, she offers no clue as to her identity, no hint of her past.

The voices of some characters kill the story.
Revisado: 10-16-24
Again, the voices really kill the story. The father of the girl - what kind of an accent was that supposed to be?!? Certainly not a Louisiana accent. And who catches a child with a net and tranquilizer?

Historia
Like many couples, Michael and Jolene Zarkades have to face the pressures of everyday life—children, careers, bills, chores—even as their twelve-year marriage is falling apart. Then a deployment sends Jolene deep into harm's way and leaves defense attorney Michael at home, unaccustomed to being a single parent to their two girls. As a mother, it agonizes Jolene to leave her family, but as a solider, she has always understood the true meaning of duty. In her letters home, she paints a rose-colored version of her life on the front lines, shielding her family from the truth.

Good story but cringeworthy narrator.
Revisado: 10-10-24
Good story, per usual for KH. But this narrator did an awful job with the kids’ voices. I almost stopped it was so bad. But such a fan of this author I finished.

Historia
Growing up with adoptive nisei parents, Susan Kiyo Ito knew only that her birth mother was Japanese American and her father White. But finding and meeting her birth mother in her early 20s was only the beginning of her search for answers, history, and identity. Though the two share a physical likeness, an affinity for ice cream, and a relationship that sometimes even feels familial, there is an ever-present tension between them, as a decades-long tug-of-war pits her birth mother’s desire for anonymity against Ito’s need to know her origins, to see and be seen.

I loved this book so much and appreciated the honesty and rawness of truth telling. It’s a must read.
