Historia
If Avery Chambers can’t fix you in 10 sessions, she won’t take you on as a client. Her successes are phenomenal—she helps people overcome everything from domineering parents to assault—and almost absorbs the emptiness she sometimes feels since her husband’s death. Marissa and Mathew Bishop seem like the golden couple—until Marissa cheats. She wants to repair things, both because she loves her husband and for the sake of their eight-year-old son. After a friend forwards an article about Avery, Marissa takes a chance on this maverick therapist.

Intriguing, but ultimately predictable.
Revisado: 05-07-22
An enjoyable listen, but increasingly far-fetched and predictable. The characters aren’t very complex or consistent, so I never really feel much for them and, while the ending is generally a neat-bow-tie-type, there are some pretty big holes or areas that lack the purpose of an intentional cliffhanger, but are also never explained to any real degree.

Thoroughly enjoyed this one. Complex in dealing with the issues without being preachy or condescending—makes it so much easier to grasp what can be a difficult concept for even those with already-open minds. Will read again and would recommend to all.

Mixed feelings about the audiobook
Revisado: 04-04-21
All of the stories are very well-written and I liked hearing them performed because hearing them in the accent in which they were written was an experience I could not create reading them in a physical book. However, the breaks between the stories was so brief that I sometimes had a difficult time telling where one story ended and another began, so I feel like the impact of each story was a little lost on me. I would almost like to read the book again in print so I could do the stories justice.

Easy, Enjoyable Listen
Revisado: 03-23-21
Nothing about this book knocked my socks off, but I did enjoy listening to it. It’s possible I’ve read a few too many of these kinds of books from this era (both British and American), so I just feel like the unfortunate circumstances don’t grip me the way they did when I first read them. It’s much like Anne of Green Gables (which is mentioned in this book), but I don’t think it will stand out in my memory like Anne. I didn’t know that “Orphan Trains” existed, so I did learn something and I found the parallel between the depression era foster care and today’s system to be nicely done.

A good look at some issues, trite ending
Revisado: 03-14-21
Overall, the book is thought-provoking in the way that Picoult’s books always question the various sides of challenging situations. But the ultimate back story of Francis and Brit didn’t fully ring true to me, nor did the suddenly self-aware reflections at the end of story. Though Turk’s life path at the end of the story is based on the journey of real-life people, it’s oversimplified here. If perspectives changed as easily as they do in this story, the fight for social justice wouldn’t be the struggle it is. In reality, people often cling to their beliefs far beyond the boundaries of reason or even the love of the people closest to them—that’s just one of the reasons why racism is so difficult to dismantle. The ending of this book tried to tie everything up with a bow rather than showing that it was maybe just a first step toward unraveling a much bigger problem.

A little long, but a nice journey
Revisado: 02-20-21
The pace of the book is pretty leisurely—I was never on the edge of my seat, but I was never bored either. The performance is really well done, so many different and varying characters with one person! I was impressed that the ending came together so nicely—not a sudden, but predictable wrap-up like so many of the books I read. Instead it was both plausible and unexpected, and realistic for such a supernatural story.

Wonderful story, wonderfully told.
Revisado: 01-16-21
I enjoyed this story beginning to end—I like how it dealt with the complexities of all kinds of human relationships and lays bare the often tragic consequences of our unjust societal systems, but all within the context of a beautifully intricate narrative. The lessons and the story are woven together like I would imagine a perfect sermon might be, rather than it being a good story with a societal/political agenda attached to it. The narration was fantastic—particularly in the character of Roy. One of those books enhanced by listening to it in an audio format.

Totally predictable!
Revisado: 06-03-20
I didn’t experience a single moment of suspense—everything was clear to me from the beginning (and I’m not a would-be detective, I’m happy to let the story take me wherever it’s gonna go). Seemed like a bad version of Liane Moriarty’s _Nine Perfect Strangers_, but that’s not even my favorite of her books, so I didn’t need a sad repeat. Did not enjoy the narrator either—sounded almost robotic (like, “Siri, read my book”). No difference in voice between the two main characters’ perspective she portrayed. I was really glad this was short as I have trouble leaving something unfinished unless I absolutely can’t stand it. If this had been longer, I might’ve given it up completely...

Oversimplified characters
Revisado: 06-01-20
It was a pleasant read and dealt with some important topics, but both the plot and the characters lacked nuance. I know jerks like Kirk exist, but Nina was didn’t really wrestle with anything and just immediately knew the right thing to do (and wasn’t afraid to do it). Same with Tom and Lila, really. Overall just felt a little too straightforward in how it all played out.
