Historia
LOS ANGELES, 1932: Lulu Wong, star of the silver screen and the pride of Chinatown, has a face known to practically everyone, especially the Chow sisters—May, Gemma, and Peony—Lulu’s former classmates and neighbors. So the girls instantly know it’s Lulu when they discover a body one morning in an out-of-the-way stable, far from the Beverly Hills home where she lived after her fame skyrocketed. The sisters suspect Lulu’s death is the result of foul play, but the police don’t seem motivated to investigate.

Solid and Steady
Revisado: 07-25-24
This book was solid and steady all the way through. I always love sister relationships and family dynamics. This was very well written, the pacing was strong and kept you involved without racing through or guessing the end. I felt immersed in 1930s LA and the Chinese community through the sisters and their voice. I am pleased and happy with this book.

Historia
It’s been five weeks since Io left Alante to follow the golden thread, and she’s no closer to finding the god on the other end. She spends her days in constant, grueling travel and her nights worrying over the fate-thread she shares with Edei—which seems to be fraying. Making matters worse, she and Bianca soon realize that their only lead has shaken them off, snapped the golden thread, and disappeared. But not before Io gathers some crucial clues.

I listened straight through the second half
Revisado: 06-28-24
I loved this book, and I loved the first one. I loved the themes of families, and the complexity of the relationship you have with them. I loved the themes of shame, unconditional love, and change in this book.
The second half of this book had me in a choke hold and I couldn’t put it down.

I was actually completely surprised by the plot twist!
Revisado: 04-13-24
I read a lot of books and my adhd powers make me predict plot twist almost every time. I was hooked, I couldn’t put it down, I was completely shocked and did not see it coming!
I loved the relationships and characterizations of the sisters, very true to sibling dynamics. Honestly I just loved this!

Historia
Descendants of the Fates are always born in threes: one to weave, one to draw, and one to cut the threads that connect people to the things they love and to life itself. The Ora sisters are no exception. Io, the youngest, uses her Fate-born abilities as a private investigator in the half-sunken city of Alante. But her latest job leads her to a horrific discovery: somebody is abducting women, maiming their life-threads, and setting the resulting wraiths loose in the city to kill.

Love and guilt all tied together
Revisado: 03-04-24
I loved this, mystery, family, yydpolitics and love story. The story of the sisters and the way families both love and hurt each other felt so real and honest. I can’t wait for the next one.

Relationship Win
Revisado: 08-10-23
I loved the voices of these characters. I appreciated the slow burn feeling between the characters without chapters of filler.
I did feel that the mid book climax led to a bit of a plot plateau and the rest of the story was relationship driven rather than event driven.
I still will probably read again, gave me warm fuzzies!

The Plot Twist Got Me
Revisado: 07-18-23
First I need to praise this book for attention to authenticity and respect while depicting characters with struggles pertaining to mental health.
Second when I started reading this book I had a suspect right away but thought it had to be a misdirection because it felt too easy. Not to go into details but I was led through the twists of the plot and the reveal left me gasping (I am very hard to surprise when reading)!
Overall very sweet and cozy for a murder mystery, not sure how that works but that’s how I felt while reading it.

Surprisingly Unpredictable
Revisado: 10-07-22
Despite knowing “the end” of the story I was pleasantly surprised by all the twists and turns. I don’t know enough about history to be bothered by any inaccuracies but that’s part of the historical fantasy genre anyway.
I loved the magic system in this! The cost of power and what the characters are willing to sacrifice had my mind racing with possibilities and predictions.
The two sister were dynamic and interesting. Their goals started out so similar but with different priorities and fears split in different directions.
I liked the book a lot. Solid interesting story and characters.

Solid and Thought Provoking
Revisado: 08-26-22
I wish I had known the story was broken into three parts with three different narratives. I was left a bit confused when the plot climaxed a few hours in.
I was very moved by the way the characters are driven by the “gifts” they posses; the way it forces them to think about how they interact with the people around them and the discrimination they are immersed in.
This book kept me reading with themes of privilege, right and wrong, guilt, and the struggle to chose action vs safety, and others over yourself.

This made me very happy
Revisado: 07-04-22
Very sweet story, well written, gives warm fuzzies.
While the plot follows a simple pattern of obstacle and resolution repeatedly the ways each encounter affects the characters is what drives the story and makes it stand out. I loved the way these characters changed and grew individually as well as in their relationships with each other.
I am always a sucker for a good post apocalyptic love story.

Amazing Start
Revisado: 03-01-22
I loved this book it is an amazing start to a hopefully exciting series. The writing style and interconnected plots complemented each other well. The voices of the three main characters were unique and expressive.
Because the audience follows all three characters they have insight and information to make connections and see the way the over arching plans are weaving together.
I loved this, will read again and wait without patients for the next book!
(Was anyone else feeling connections to Once Upon a Marigold by Jean Ferris? Would love to know if the author took bones of inspiration from one of my all time favorites.)
