confusing story that delights in bullying

I dnf'd this book because it was confusing. chapters jump around in time and the characters are not likable. the stories spends a lot of time on the kids and bullying and it's really tedious to listen to so I just stopped. I'm going to go find something else.

MC is an annoying bundle of cliches slathered on milk toast

I hated the main character for a lot of reasons. Since you're in her head exclusively, it's hard to finish this trilogy. I wish someone would delete her and rewrite this with more snarky grannies and more glocks. So far, there's been no glocks or grannies wielding them and I'm more than 50% in. I feel lied to. not sure who this was written for. If you like bland mcs that are cliches held together by crushes and mysteries with barely any twists, then this might be for you. it's definitely not for me.

this isn't a first book for a series

I'm sorry but this isn't a first book. It references events that happened before it and there's a lot of names but not much about them but I got the feeling these characters were all flashed out in other books. I'm just guessing about that though. unfortunately, this is the only book by this author I've read so I was totally lost. I couldn't get into the story and didn't like anyone except Adzuko I think his name is.

if you've never read anything else by this author, don't start here or you'll be as lost as I was. Start with another series. the narrator was good and I enjoyed her performance. so it wasn't her. I just needed more context. this book has a lot of meetings but they just went over my head because all the characters were just names with dialogue tags.

I love Lettie and the Ladies

this was fantastic. I loved Lettie and the Ladies, especially Barbara. I hope we'll see more of her. I love reading about tough women who do what they love and don't care what anyone else thinks about them. So refreshing.

lots of action, banter and a thrill ride

this was a thrill ride as is every book Lucas appears in. I saw a few reviews about this book beyond preachy but it's not. they missed the point Weather was trying to make at the end. it's an excellent book, well acted and well done! I can't wait for the next one.

I didn't see the ending coming. this was quite a dark ride that kept me guessing until the end. I recommend this book to mystery lovers.

not explosive

The blurb exaggerated a bit. The books move very slowly and are 90% politics (which I hate) and only 10% space opera and action. The story also focuses a lot of time and attention on torturing the slaves at the expense of moving the plot along.

the last 50% is a lot better. it's got more action and it feels like the books are going somewhere that might be explosive.

cool premise but the execution falls short

The narrator was great. I've got no complaints there. I'm just annoyed the author decided not to starr from the beginning and instead, starts with the run up to the end and flashes back to the beginning then back to the ending and repeats throughout the book until the flashbacks catch up to the end. the flashbacks were excellent but ruined because I knew the ending. it was obvious from the first chapter. I hoped the book was leading to a last minute twist but nope. so the deconstructed story structure has no payoff and is thus pointless and spoils what would have been an emotional ending. But the author robbed it of any impact by drawing it out over the course of the book. This structure works best when there's a twist at the end. Since there isn't, the ending is just drawn out for no reason from page one and it's annoying instead of sad.
