Great!

My only complaint would be about the lack of background on major characters from previous novels. I know they aren’t there for the reasons they aren’t, but I always love character continuity, even if their stories came to an end.

Was Surprised By Ending
Revisado: 05-18-23
I thought this had all of King’s brilliant horror elements, but what I found even more impactful was the highlighting of real, traumatic social issues that were described (quite poignantly, painful, relatable) that we, in the US, badly address; if we address it at all. Real fear of real things is so much more terrifying that anything paranormal. Just like the idea of the paranormal, what makes it scary is that there is no reasoning with it and it is completely out of our control. Without giving spoilers, those living in the real world under the conditions the various characters try to survive are also left with no recourse, no bargaining, no control. The ending was a pleasant surprise that was also scary, becoming the monster you escaped, but it ended on a positive note. This is much different than the ending of his other novels; The Shining, Bag of Bones. This book may not give you the rush or jump scares of what some people want in a King novel, but this goes beyond that. This is a real life terror that is more spine chilling and brutal than others because this is a nightmare endemic to the culture we still live in, globally, from 1994 to 2023. So little has changed, and the helplessness of the characters made me reflect on the world I live in as a woman and a mother.

Really good story. Very much enjoy the book. I’m not terribly hot on the narration. Lots of vocal fry and long drawn out words. If an insane Jack Nicholson spawned with a very drunk Kim Kardashian West, and that being did books on tape... yea. Due to that, it left me needing to rewind or just start over full chapters if I get distracted for even a second. So much asmr and that is not my strong suit.
