Fascinating case studies with vivid examples to illustrate the main point of how and why government tech is so complicated and how to improve it. Loved it. Highly recommend to anyone interested in policy or tech.

Historia
What would it be like to live in a well-rested world? Far too many of us have claimed productivity as the cornerstone of success. Brainwashed by capitalism, we subject our bodies and minds to work at an unrealistic, damaging, and machine‑level pace—feeding into the same engine that enslaved millions into brutal labor for its own relentless benefit. In Rest Is Resistance, Tricia Hersey, aka the Nap Bishop, casts an illuminating light on our troubled relationship with rest and how to imagine and dream our way to a future where rest is exalted.

Poetic and soothing
Revisado: 12-06-24
In the age of chatGPT, this book was music to my ears as it is written in a poetic rhythm that is artistic and soulful. I loved the author’s voice, who clearly communicated her passion. I loved every minute of this book. Even though I pride myself in being somewhat knowledgeable about the subject matter, I have to admit I learned a lot!!! It really blew my mind and opened my eyes. and I definitely felt inspired. Highly recommend.

How do we make social justice the most pleasurable human experience? How can we awaken within ourselves desires that make it impossible to settle for anything less than a fulfilling life? Author and editor Adrienne Maree Brown finds the answer in something she calls “pleasure activism,” a politics of healing and happiness that explodes the dour myth that changing the world is just another form of work. Drawing on the black feminist tradition, she challenges us to rethink the ground rules of activism.

Practical guide to unconventional activism

This book was an incredible collection of quotes, conversations, and insights into making change from the bottom up on a personal and interdependent level. It was very trans/queer inclusive and examined the non-binary nature of gender. It really got me thinking about practices and actions I can take in my own life for pleasure in ways that can dismantle structural oppression.

On February 17, 2022, Brittney Griner arrived in Moscow ready to spend the WNBA offseason playing for the Russian women’s basketball team where she had been the centerpiece of previous championship seasons. Instead, a security checkpoint became her gateway to hell when she was arrested for mistakenly carrying under one gram of medically prescribed hash oil. Brittney’s world was violently upended in a crisis she has never spoken in detail about publicly—until now.

Enthralling
Revisado: 05-25-24
An amazing story of perseverance. I was captivated from the start. Also an intriguing analysis of intersectionality and the terrible hostage situation for so many around the world, as well as freedom and incarceration, and police brutality, for so many. This was an inspiring story that opened my eyes and brought me to tears many times. Thank you for sharing your story! Michelle Burford really brought it to life with masterful research and storytelling sprinkled throughout.

Historia
With its deeply personal and seamless blend of memoir, cultural history, literary criticism, and reportage, The Recovering turns our understanding of the traditional addiction narrative on its head, demonstrating that the story of recovery can be every bit as electrifying as the train wreck itself. Leslie Jamison deftly excavates the stories we tell about addiction - both her own and others' - and examines what we want these stories to do and what happens when they fail us. All the while, she offers a fascinating look at the larger history of the recovery movement and at the complicated bearing that race and class have on our understanding of who is criminal and who is ill.

As an academic, I LOVED this story, woven with personal anecdotes, literary criticism, and political commentary. Well-written and thought out carefully with beautiful commentary on the value of all lives and bodies across race and gender. And of course, an inspiring journey of alcoholic recovery.

Historia
How God is described today strikes many as mean, primitive, backwards, illogical, tribal, and at odds with the frontiers of science. At the same time, many intuitively feel a sense of reverence and awe in the world. Can we find a new way to talk about God? Pastor and New York Times best-selling author Rob Bell shows how traditional ideas have grown stale and dysfunctional and reveals a new path for how to return vitality and vibrancy to how we understand God.

Historia
For Stefanie Wilder-Taylor, alcohol was the seasoning that could give almost any activity more flavor—from liquor cabinet concoctions in high school to tequila shots in her early stand-up comedy days to grocery store wine in young motherhood. A drink instantly took the edge off and made even the most difficult adversary (be it a tough crowd in a comedy club or a judgmental PTA mom) not just bearable but fun.

Historia
What could possibly be “lucky” about addiction? Absolutely nothing, thought Laura McKowen when drinking brought her to her knees. As she puts it, she “kicked and screamed . . . wishing for something - anything - else” to be her issue. The people who got to drink normally, she thought, were so damn lucky. But in the midst of early sobriety, when no longer able to anesthetize her pain and anxiety, she realized that she was actually the lucky one. Lucky to feel her feelings, live honestly, really be with her daughter, change her legacy.

Inspiring
Revisado: 02-27-24
This was a very positive story of affirmation. I could relate to her and felt very validated. I loved the conclusion- she does a great job wrapping everything up and leaving you with a take-away point. My favorite parts were the “pregnancy principle”—I’m not a woman nor a parent but this one hit home!—and the point about how the label “alcoholic” is more harmful than helpful. This was a nuanced and thought-provoking book. It got a little repetitive with the “and now my life has completely changed” message, but I thoroughly enjoyed the story and the message. Hopeful and inspiring for everyone.

Wow- amazing storytelling
Revisado: 02-10-24
I was hooked from the start. I don’t usually get hooked on audiobooks, but this one I couldn’t put down and I binge listened to it! First of all, the storytelling is amazing- wonderful narrative structure plus funny, interesting, and detailed- I definitely got that “like I’m watching a movie” feeling. I was right IN the story. Plus, it’s really good voice narration. She uses different voices, accents and tones for all the characters, and uses a really nice cadence to read it. The story was also very inspiring and I felt inspired on my own journey of sobriety and finding my life’s purpose. My main criticism is that she doesn’t talk enough about her white privilege and how that played a role in her sentence. There is no way a Black woman would have walked away with the same result. I kept thinking that she would address it at some point, but she never even acknowledged the fact that as a white woman she had an advantage in working in the system. She also had an opportunity to address issues like prison reform and criminal justice reform, which she implies based on the cruel punishments she describes, but never explicitly addresses the issue. Finally, she keeps saying things like “it was all my fault” and “I did this to myself” without addressing the root cause of the opiate crisis in America (Purdue Pharma) or other root causes of addiction, such as our poor school systems and the way that people don’t have access to appropriate mental health care etc. she just puts all the blame on herself without exploring any other possibilities of systemic issues and how that can lead to addiction. That is my only criticism, otherwise I thought it was extremely well-done and implicitly discusses other issues, including gender inequality, alcoholism and abuse/neglect in families, and the overdose epidemic raging through rural communities. I absolutely loved this book and loved this story, and I will definitely listen to the last part over and over as she ends with an extremely inspiring and heartfelt message that I will take into the future with me.

Historia
Of all the things humans rely on plants for - sustenance, beauty, medicine, fragrance, flavor, fiber - surely the most curious is our use of them to change consciousness: to stimulate or calm, fiddle with or completely alter, the qualities of our mental experience. Take coffee and tea: People around the world rely on caffeine to sharpen their minds. But we do not usually think of caffeine as a drug, or our daily use as an addiction, because it is legal and socially acceptable.
