Historia
In the desolate middle of the largest ocean on earth, two great navies approached, one bent on conclusive battle, the other lying in ambush. Six months after Pearl Harbor, Yamamoto again crossed the Pacific with the largest and most powerful naval armada the world had ever seen, this time to finish the job. Nimitz waited for him with what he had, placed exactly where he needed it. Both admirals depended on their fliers, some veterans of battle, others raw and unproven. Striking first meant decisive victory.

Personalized view of Midway
Revisado: 01-17-24
Like novels by Jeff Shaara this story weaves actual characters who participated in the Battle of Midway with some fictional characters and likely dialogue of pilots of that era. The author is eminently qualified to bring this well researched story to life.

Kept me listening non-stop for days
Revisado: 12-03-22
As a submariner with eighteen years in the submarine force, I found this listen to be excellent. It touches on historical events, and follows the careers of several of the legends of the US Navy in WWII, Admiral Lockwood, Sam Dealy, Richard O'Kane, Mush Morton and others. I only served on nuclear submarines, but the descriptions of life on diesel submarines matches the legend that has been passed down. The story of Charlie's progression from "non-qualified Lieutenant" to Captain of a submarine in two years was a little bit of a stretch, but it made for good reading. Think "Operation Pacific" and "Run Silent, Run Deep" and "Destination Tokyo" rolled into one series of books.

Great insight into your family pet
Revisado: 08-25-22
I found this book so useful, that I purchased the author's book on dog training. He goes into how much wolf is in every dog's DNA, and how some attributes of wolves have been bred out of certain species over time, and some have been retained. As my interest is centered on one type of dog, I went pretty quickly through breed categories I had less interest in, and that is the reason I only rated the content as a 4 of 5. The narration was excellent.

I have read or listened to most of the Mitch Rapp series and this may be the best of all. Started a little slow but picked up into a very fast paced foreign intrigue novel. A lot of good guys and very bad guys and great action scenes.

Wilson shot a glance over his right shoulder at San Ramon. In addition to the blinking of anti-aircraft artillery guns, he could see clouds of smoke on the field from the numerous Slash hits. Breathing through his mouth, he concentrated on getting fast and maintaining a slight climb. Bright fireballs of AAA shot by him in groups of three and four, orderly trails from low to high. His body was tense, ready for impact. He felt and heard the thud behind, on his right.

A Second gripping read from Kevin Miller
Revisado: 12-31-20
Plenty of excitement for those who love naval/military fiction. This book, like the first in the series, is filled with exciting combat scenes, along with the everyday personalities in ships and squadrons that cross over into how military personnel perform under the stress of adversity. This adds a level of reality that is not found in many books of this genre.
The narration is also excellent, and I recall none of the "annoying" mispronunciations of ships and/or locations in this audiobook.

Historia
Hal Moore led his life by a set of principles - a code developed through years of experience, trial-and-error, and the study of leaders of every stripe. In a career spanning more than 30 years, Moore's life touched upon many historical events: the Occupation of Japan, the Korean War, Vietnam, and the refashioning of the US Army into an all-volunteer force. At each juncture, he learned critical lessons and had opportunities to affect change through measured responses.

Concise summary of the traits of an excellent leader
Revisado: 11-04-20
I have listened to many books about leader ship and leaders. This story of Hal Moore’s life and career is a fine example of all the traits of a great leader. If you were a fan of the book We Were Soldiers and Young you will enjoy learning more about the man portrayed in this book.

Eye opening
Revisado: 10-22-20
As a grandfather of an “elite” baseball player, I can vouch for the truth of this short treatise on the world of kid’s travel teams. There are so many levels of reality in the wide gulf between parent’s, player’s and coaches’ goals, agendas and expectations that a review can not cover them in any depth. This is about women’s elite softball but it applies to all sports. A must read for parents of aspiring athletes.

Historia
Without John C. Houbolt, a mid-level engineer at NASA, Apollo 11 would never have made it to the moon. Top NASA engineers on the project, including Werner Von Braun, strongly advocated for a single, huge spacecraft to travel to the moon, land, and return to Earth. It's the scenario used in 1950s cartoons and horror movies about traveling to outer space. Houbolt had another idea: Lunar Orbit Rendezvous. LOR would link two spacecraft in orbit while the crafts were travelling at 3,600 miles an hour around the moon. His plan was ridiculed and considered unthinkable.

Great story distracting background noise
Revisado: 07-31-19
A truly great story about an engineer with integrity and how he struggled against the NASA bureaucracy. I found the narration excellent, the story was excellent, the scientific facts were presented in a way they could be easily understood by the layperson. The only drawback was background music and background conversations, meant to add an artistic touch to the narration but were distracting and made parts of the book hard to follow.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to find yourself strapped to a giant rocket that's about to go from zero to 17,500 miles per hour? Or to look back on Earth from outer space and see the surprisingly precise line between day and night? Or to stand in front of the Hubble Space Telescope, wondering if the emergency repair you're about to make will inadvertently ruin humankind's chance to unlock the universe's secrets? Mike Massimino has been there, and in Spaceman he puts you inside the suit.

Possibly my best non-fiction book listen.
Revisado: 07-09-19
Mike Massimino weaves a story of grit and determination, of love of science, country and fellow space traveler. I laughed and cried at points in the book. It was as easy to read as a spellbinding action novel, with anecdotes about the heroes of early space travel we are familiar with--Glenn, Armstrong, White, Grissom and others.
The author describes accurately stories of how congress and the American people put programs on both banquets of plenty and starvation diets based on popularity, with serious impacts on people, programs, and safety. It is educational as well as inspirational. A great read.
