Historia
There is a world. One of endless night, surrounded by an even deeper darkness. Filled with nightmares come to life, twisted shapes that slink to windows and ease open doors, sliding across floors to look down on helpless faces. There is another world. A bright world, so bright it burns. Filled with stacked stones that call forth miracles, raised by callused hands that tremble in their work, drained with each stone lifted, settled, lifted again.

One of my favorites
Revisado: 02-18-25
Wow. This is one of my favorites. I’m not sure if I’m too generous with my review stars or not. If like to give generously when authors do a good job. That said, I occasionally come across a book that stands above other books—even really good ones. This is one such book. I would give it six stars if I could.

Most pastors and leaders are godly, wonderful people that don't abuse their sheep. They shepherd their flocks gently and patiently. But we can't ignore the growing number who do not. We need gentle shepherds now more than ever, and in Bully Pulpit, seminary president and biblical scholar Michael J. Kruger offers a unique perspective for both church leaders and church members on the problem of spiritual abuse, how to spot it, and how to handle it in the church.

All Church Leaders Need to Hear
Revisado: 09-13-24
This book is a wake up call for today’s church leaders, of which I am one. I especially appreciated the practical tips and the overall labeling of fear and pride as root causes. These same sins keep doing us damage, right?
I gave the narrator 4/5. Great job overall, but bro, you cannot be a book narrator and mispronounce well known LOTR names.

These three books narrated by Andy are a masterpiece. They capture the accents and voices of the characters associated with the movies but are of course JR Tolins original works.

The company of the Ring is torn asunder. Frodo and Sam continue their journey alone down the great River Anduin - alone, that is, save for the mysterious creeping figure that follows wherever they go. This continues the classic tale begun in The Fellowship of the Ring, which reaches its awesome climax in The Return of the King.

I have consumed this book many different ways from the movies, to a BBC recording, to a recording that I had on CDs, and the original audible recording. None of them. None of them rise to the level of this recording. If I could give this 10 stars I would. If I could go back and notch down every other review by one star, I would. Simply the best.

Most Disappointing Cosmere
Revisado: 08-14-24
Wow. Not sure if the story is that mediocre or if the narrator just didn’t match. The narrator was very difficult to get used to for about one third of the book. Voice quality is great. But tempo and timing seemed very weird. Several sentences were just read with the emphasis in a totally weird way that did not help comprehension.

Grace Defined and Defended

Historia
Grace - a doctrine central to the gospel - ought to be clearly defined so it can be celebrated, relished, and consistently defended. In this book, Kevin DeYoung leads us back to the Canons of Dort, a 17th-century document originally written to precisely and faithfully define this precious doctrine. The Canons of Dort stand as a faithful witness to the precise nature of God's supernatural, sovereign, redeeming, resurrecting grace - when so many people settle for vague generalities that water down the truth.

I’m not sure how well this title works as an audible audiobook. And the narrator did not help, in my opinion, to bring it more to life to the listener. This seems like a good book that I might buy a physical copy of and have it hand as a reference should I need to look into something particularon the Synod of Dort.

Historia
How did the idea arise that masculinity is dangerous and destructive? Bestselling author Nancy Pearcey leads you on a fascinating excursion through American history to discover why the script for masculinity turned toxic—and how to fix it. Pearcey then turns to surprising findings from sociology. Religion is often cast as a cause of domestic abuse. But research shows that authentically committed Christian men test out as the most loving and engaged husbands and fathers. They have the lowest rates of divorce and domestic violence of any group in America.

Good, but confused
Revisado: 11-21-23
While I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the loads of information contained in it, it tries to tackle in my estimation three different topics under one title.
The book begins on point talking about true masculinity and uses the paradigm of the good man versus the real man.
Next, the book delves into the industrial age and pens most of our masculinity problems on changes and cultures that accompanied that age. (I found this section both enlightening and somewhat dubious. It seems as though from the author’s viewpoint, all, or most of all, the problems between men and women would be solved if we simply reverted back to customs and practices of the pre-industrial age.)
Lastly the author takes up pathologies associated with a small minority of men and how they work themselves out into both spousal and child abuse.
All of these topics are germane for this generation and all are related to men in general, but at times it seemed as though we had started a completely new book.
