Not really Sherlock Holmes
Revisado: 01-01-24
I might have enjoyed this more if it had been about anybody but Sherlock Holmes. I got to chapter 4 and they completely changed the character of Sherlock Holmes. I couldn't tolerate it. All the performances were great.

Historia
When winter's done, but spring has not yet fully sprung, much of Alaska turns to slush. Locally, it's called "breakup," and it's a…messy time of year. It's certainly messy for Kate Shugak; between doing her taxes, being chased by grizzlies, and getting shot at by feuding families, she has to cope with an NTSB investigation that hits very close to home. Then, of course, there's the body in the woods. And up at the old mining town. And…being Kate Shugak, somehow she can't leave well enough alone, and begins to tease apart a well-planned and surprising crime.

Historia
In 1916, Sven Ormson leaves a restless life in Stockholm to seek adventure in Svalbard, an Arctic archipelago where darkness reigns four months of the year and he might witness the splendor of the Northern Lights one night and be attacked by a polar bear the next. But his time as a miner ends when an avalanche nearly kills him, leaving him disfigured, and Sven flees even further, to an uninhabited fjord. There, with the company of a loyal dog, he builds a hut and lives alone, testing himself against the elements.

About good relationships, despite isolated setting
Revisado: 07-07-22
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was the setting that drew me in initially, and that was marvelous. The author does a great job of describing the physical setting, with its beauty and hardships. What kept me going were the relationships that developed, despite the fact that Sven lived in such isolation.

Design a hero by checklist
Revisado: 02-12-21
This was an enjoyable listen, and I love the concept. The hero, however, was designed just too perfectly. It was as if the author used checklist for everything in a modern, sensitive man and came up with the hero here. I just didn't buy it. However, there is pleasure to be had in that perfection also.

Historia
Gemma Smythe dedicated her life to the glory of battle. With her fellow War Monks, she worshipped the war gods, rained destruction on her enemies, and raised the dead when the fancy struck. Until her sister Keeley became the prophesied Blacksmith Queen, and Gemma broke faith with her order to journey to the Amichai Mountain and fight by Keeley's side. The Amichai warriors are an unruly, never-to-be-tamed lot, especially their leader-in-waiting, Quinn. But when the War Monks declare support for Gemma's ruthless sister Beatrix, the immaturity of her key ally's the least of her problems.

Not nearly as good as the Blacksmith Queen
Revisado: 01-17-21
I really enjoyed The Blacksmith Queen and the world building there. This one just had too much "humor" in the form of people yelling at each other It got old really fast and I found it unpleasant, rather than humorous. I think the fact that I didn't like the main character in the book didn't help my overall enjoyment of the book. I rather doubt I'll bother with the next book in the series.

Disappointing
Revisado: 10-18-20
I had to skip ahead a number of times to just tolerate this. I am willing to suspend disbelief but this required too much of that! I didn't feel connected with the characters. I liked the first book in the series so I was disappointed to find this one so lacking

So much repetition
Revisado: 06-24-20
This was a struggle to finish. I ended up skipping chapters. The basic premise was fine, but there was so much rumination and repetition on why these two hated each other (at the beginning), and then why they felt they couldn't be together (in the last part of the book). It was just good enough that I ended finishing, but barely.

Very enjoyable listen
Revisado: 06-21-20
Despite some drawbacks I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this. THere were some pretty silly plot points, and I get tired of problems that result when people just don't talk to each other. In fact I often give up on books for just that reason. But the writing was good enough to keep me enjoying it despite that.

"Vampires in Chicago! You'd think headlines like that would have provoked the fine citizens of the Windy City to take up arms against us bloodsucking fiends. Instead, 10 months later, we're enjoying a celebrity status reserved for the Hollywood elite - fending off paparazzi only slightly less dangerous than cross- and stake-wielding slayers. Don't get me wrong. Joe Public isn't exactly thrilled to be living side-by-side with the undead, but at least they haven't stormed the castle...yet."

Entertaining enough to keep me listening
Revisado: 05-25-20
The book was entertaining enough to keep me listening, annoying enough that I won't get the sequels. Has the common trope of the heroine everyone wants and an annoying secondary romance where she feels bad when she shouldn't: just because a guy is nice doesn't mean you have to have a relationship with him or explain why you won't. The narrator does a competent enough job although there were random pronunciations that were incorrect. I always yell at the narrator when that happens, too bad she doesn't hear me. Characters were pretty formulaic.
