Historia
Across two parallel narratives, Murakami draws listeners into a mind-bending universe in which Lauren Bacall, Bob Dylan, a split-brained data processor, a deranged scientist, his shockingly undemure granddaughter, and various thugs, librarians, and subterranean monsters collide to dazzling effect. What emerges is a novel that is at once hilariously funny and a deeply serious meditation on the nature and uses of the mind.

Always love this author, but this book I loved more than most. Melancholy and poetic, it was so engaging. I also loved the narrator. The voice acting for this was perfect and really suited the story.

Historia
You are a failed novelist about to turn 50. A wedding invitation arrives in the mail: Your boyfriend of the past nine years is engaged to someone else. You can't say yes - it would be too awkward - and you can't say no - it would look like defeat. On your desk are a series of invitations to half-baked literary events around the world. Question: How do you arrange to skip town? Answer: You accept them all.

Couldn't put it down
Revisado: 05-01-18
A story of utter beauty, poetry and the complexities of love. I started it and didn't stop listening until it was done. This story of a somewhat silly protagonist stuck in the narrow vision of his everyday problems, expands into a meaningful look into the purpose and meaning of human existence through the passage of time. I laughed, I cried, I will definitely listen to it again and probably buy a physical copy. The best book I've engaged with in a long time.

Nothing ever changes in Sanders. The town's still got a video store, for God's sake. So why doesn't Eli Teague want to leave? Not that he'd ever admit it, but maybe he's been waiting - waiting for the traveler to come back. The one who's roared into his life twice before, pausing just long enough to drop tantalizing clues before disappearing in a cloud of gunfire and a squeal of tires. The one who's a walking anachronism, with her tricorne hat, flintlock rifle, and steampunked Model A Ford.

Young adult fiction
Revisado: 05-01-18
Bought the book expecting it to be an adult read. Although it was written fine and an easy read, the concepts and characters were a little juvenile. I kept expecting it to develop into something but hit the end and realised that was the entirety of the concept. Would recommend to age 12-16.

Trigger warnings
Revisado: 01-08-18
I'm a long time lover of Tan's work but this book was extremely traumatic. It follows three generations of women in China and their essentially horrific lives. While it is beautiful writing, it is a book full of all of the powerlessness and destitution that a woman could possibly endure. Normally Tan's work has some sort of community or spiritual hope that connect the characters throughout her novels, but there was no such hope to be found here.
I kept listening hoping that the story would become more hopeful but every new chapter brought more horror, rape, death, loss and powerlessness. Although it come to a resolution at the very end, the last 20 minutes of calm was not worth the 20-some hours of having to hear all of the violence and desolation that affect women in a position of powerlessness. I know it's important for some people to read in order to understand the reality of women's lives, but personally if I had known there would be so much rape, violence and destitution I wouldn't have picked this up.

Not her best
Revisado: 01-07-18
I normally love Atwood but this was hard to finish. She was trying to create an interesting world but it seemed to continually fall short with inconsistencies and boring dialogue. I finished it, but only because I wanted to give it a fair shot. I'm sure someone could love this book but it sure wasn't for me.

Author essentially listing places to hide things. Like under a matress, or in a bleach bottle... not useful.

Completely un-researched and boring conspiracy theory with no practical knowledge. A venue for author spouting opinions.
