When Mallon the Undying threatened the land years ago, the elves stopped him - and then disappeared. Now Mallon's followers seek to bring him back to finish what he started. Only the Keepers - storytellers, historians, and magic-wielders - are left to stand against them. Alaric, who betrayed everything he believed to save his wife - and still failed. Great reader made up for less stellar writing.
Revisado: 11-07-24
The reader was excellent so as to make it possible to overlook writing that would have otherwise distracted a reader from an excellent story. I can only wonder at what editing might have been done. Too many cliches and repetitions of the same language that became annoying over time. The story was complex and creative enough to deserve better in order to turn it into a classic.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Hard to swallow (warning: spoilers)
Revisado: 02-01-24
I bring a solid background to comment upon this book, a choice of my book club: As a woman who lived through the whole 50's, was in college during the 60's. subscribed to the feminist liberation movement, and, yes, majored and worked in clinical science before paying my way through law school, I practiced law with an overly male-dominated, international law firm for 30 years, then left to work for Legal Aid where, inter alia, I represented victims of family violence, divorce, employment issues and other generally - but not exclusively - female clients. While I agree that women and their abilities were dissed and subjected to a double standards then (as they are now but less openly), I fail to see why there has been such excitement over this novel. Admittedly, using Elizabeth as a female Spock (the logical Venusian from Star Trek) or Valentine Michael Smith (the human raised on Mars by Martians) presents a wonderful opportunity to comment upon cultural mores and idiocies from an objective viewpoint. Using her daughter Mad for a child's naive view might have worked had the child not been presented as so very wise starting at her tender 4 years so as to strain credulity. The executive producer of Supper at Six was well-developed as almost a paragon of manly virtues, but the evil males smelled of caricature rather than characterization. All major female characters had the worst of all possible treatment-of-women scenarios except the "mean girls" who went along with the norms. Really? I appreciate the author wanting to cover all aspects of the "patriarchy," but the coincidence of mistreatment among the women was too pat, and the "science" itself either simplistic or so vague as to be meaningless. The cultural abuses of women was in-your-face, perhaps making readers chuckle who have encountered male chauvinism in milder forms, but doing nothing to advance the cause of systematic abuse among those entitled men who, by and large, remain in charge. I question how many readers who enjoyed the book struck out to maximize their abilities because of it, as opposed to merely feeling justified in being upset about the mistreatment they had received or were experiencing.

Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Revisado: 12-04-23
Amazing how one totally believable story can cover so many aspects of our current dysfunctional American culture and yet find within it enough humanity to keep alive hope for better years ahead. The reader is note perfect as the young narrator of this story. Once started on this young man’s journey, I could not stop listening as it traveled so many different roads.

Historia
Paul Bäumer is just 19 years old when he and his classmates enlist. They are Germany’s Iron Youth who enter the war with high ideals and leave it disillusioned or dead. As Paul struggles with the realities of the man he has become, and the world to which he must return, he is led like a ghost of his former self into the war’s final hours. All Quiet is one of the greatest war novels of all time, an eloquent expression of the futility, hopelessness and irreparable losses of war.

Read the book some years ago and thought it was time to revisit it. Got the audio because of declining eyesight. Wow! Frank Muller’s reading vivified the prose and really made it live. Nothing could be better, however careful a silent reading might be.

Historia
Spartacus, a fictionalization of a slave revolt in ancient Rome in 71 BC, is well known today because of the 1960 movie starring Kirk Douglas and Laurence Olivier. It was originally published in 1951 by Fast himself, after being turned down by every mainstream publisher of the day because of Fast's blacklisting for his Communist Party sympathies. The story of Spartacus, born a slave, trained as a gladiator, who led a slave revolt that was eventually put down by Crassus, was immensely popular and went on to sell millions of copies.

A very good read although not what I expected
Revisado: 04-30-23
Far from a simple story of the slave uprising, this work is a fascinating, thoughtful and many—sided view of. the incident by those directly and indirectly affected by it . Excellent reader gives life to the disparate occupations, ethnicities, ages and social status’s involved, Highly recommended !

A big celebration is in the works, but Allan really isn't interested (and he'd like a bit more control over his vodka consumption). So he decides to escape. He climbs out the window in his slippers and embarks on a hilarious and entirely unexpected journey, involving, among other surprises, a suitcase stuffed with cash.

Humor is a very personal and cultural thing. Although the premise of this book suggested manifold opportunities for humor, the black humor involved left me wondering why anyone would consider this something that their children would enjoy.

Romance should be kept in its category
Revisado: 02-10-23
I could not finish this trite and cutesy story that focused again and again on electrical thrill contact and sculpted bodies. If I ‘d wanted to hear a no -brainer romance, I’d have looked for that category. Admittedly, romance is a subset fiction, but when looking under fiction and literature, I expect romance to be weeded out rather than be included with more serious fiction, particularly when the story is nothing more than an excuse for the book

What a wild ride!
Revisado: 11-29-21
The title alone demands attention! Although the story necessarily starts off slowly (in keeping with Fred’s initial hapless personality), it gradually builds - and then snowballs - with layer after layer of characters and character development. The whole culminates in a truly satisfying read, leaving you a bit breathless and astounded that such creative silliness could be such fun. Performance good overall, but falls short of excellent; Fiends need more than consistent loud, raspy voices.

Historia
Clare and Henry have known each other since Clare was six and Henry was 36. They were married when Clare was 23 and Henry was 31. Impossible but true, because Henry is one of the first people diagnosed with Chrono-Displacement Disorder: periodically his genetic clock resets and he finds himself misplaced in time, pulled to moments of emotional gravity from his life, past and future. His disappearances are spontaneous, his experiences unpredictable, alternately harrowing and amusing.

Romance novel
Revisado: 10-08-20
For all its intricacies, which are well done, this is first and foremost a romance novel. Sci fi fans be warned! Even that defect would be better if the female vocalist did not keep using a too young voice as her character aged. The sentimentality of the story was too much Nicolas Sparks. A good book for those that like such things.
