Thoughtful, poised, faithful, framed by Nassar trauma
Revisado: 03-05-25
Narrative and reading are more than the sum of their parts. Tone sometimes scattered and thoroughly bittersweet, true to life itself, not least one marked by deep trauma and public victory. Refreshing perspective to hear from an evangelical Christian. Voice worth hearing for anybody concerned about the Nassar case and all of the awful sobering individual and institutional brokenness that it shows.

Historia
The Quran, a book that brings glad tidings to mankind along with divine admonition, stresses the importance of man’s discovery of truth on both spiritual and intellectual planes. Every book has its objective, and the objective of the Quran is to make man aware of the creation plan of God. That is, to tell man why God created this world; what the purpose is of settling man on earth; what is required from man in his pre-death life span; and what he is going to confront after death.

Strange polemical holy book, stiff translation and reading
Revisado: 05-25-24
I have no idea whether this translation and reading might be par for the course (or better) as the Quran goes. But it is really a plod. I find the content contentious and rambling, which of course doesn't help. As an orthodox but curious Christian, it is disheartening to consider how absurd religious texts can read to outsiders while being de rig hallowed by adherents. (The Christian Bible is a very different and much more diverse book, but I understand much better how it sounds to all of the people who dismiss let alone actively disparage it).

Great reading of uneven provocative memoir essays
Revisado: 05-25-24
There are brilliant self-effacing and no-nonsense stories (and opinions) in here. There are also plenty of gross, abrasive, and boring bits. Good audiobook reading that could have been great with a more mature voice and/or some shrewd editing. Drew is an interesting writer, i hope to keep exploring over time.

Historia
The Bible is made up of 66 books that tell the magnificent story of God's redemptive work in Christ. In this new audio recording of the full Bible, that story comes alive in a fresh way through the voice of award-winning modern hymn writer Kristyn Getty. From Genesis to Revelation, this word-for-word reading of the ESV Bible text is a great way to encounter God's word and the story of salvation.

Straightforward reading of a slightly awkward-sounding Bible translation
Revisado: 04-05-24
The Bible is not easy listening, especially in this translation. The narration is a bit metronomic in my listening but much better than a true monotone. I don't want to disrespect God, translators, or the narrator, but listening through this for a year plus (intermixed with other listening of course) was not faith building, at least not by traditional evangelical sensibilities. I am struggling to empathize either why someone would love or hate the Christian Bible, to find it either pure all-sufficient truth and wisdom or alternatively an evil destructive base expression of everything wrong with humans. Anyway, whatever your reason for reading the Bible, I expect you could do better or worse than thia audio version of the ESV.

In Try Softer, you'll learn how to: know and set emotional and relational boundaries; make sense of the difficult experiences you've had; identify your attachment style-and how that affects your relationships today; move through emotions rather than get stuck by them; and grow in self-compassion and talk back to your inner critic. Trying softer is sacred work. And while it won't be perfect or easy, it will be worth it. Because this is what we were made for: a living, breathing, moving, feeling, connected, beautifully incarnational life.

Interesting succinct Christian applications of modern psychology and neuroscience
Revisado: 03-25-24
Appreciated this book although I instinctively question some emphases and was not in headspace to try most of the exercises. Both Christians and secular folks should consider giving it a hearing allthough it is clearly in a Christian reference frame and evangelical Chrstians are the primary intended audience).

What is autism: a lifelong disability or a naturally occurring form of cognitive difference akin to certain forms of genius? In truth, it is both of these things and more - and the future of our society depends on our understanding it. Wired reporter Steve Silberman unearths the secret history of autism, long suppressed by the same clinicians who became famous for discovering it, and finds surprising answers to the crucial question of why the number of diagnoses has soared in recent years.

Artful eclectic narrative journalism
Revisado: 03-06-24
This book is quite anecdotal and scattered, but nonetheless very engaging and ultimately coherent. I really appreciate the many-textured take on ASD studies, autistic people and their families, academic and advocacy institutions (and also the societies/cultures that shape all of the above). Doesn't hold back against its villains without at all dehumanizing them.
I can't efficiently dissect the narrator but he is excellent. He sets the bar for conversational narrative nonfiction reading by a non-author. A total professional job, in the best sense.

Quirky prophetic calls from quirky elder statesman
Revisado: 09-30-23
Never read or heard Dallas Willard in any form before, just vaguely honored as a devout but unconventional philosopher. Book is quirky for sure but pushes a lot of buttons that few others do. In spite of many quirks it should be very relatable for Christians of all flavors, and a great reference perspective on living as a Christian for anyone believing anything.

How can an evangelical view of Scripture be reconciled with modern biblical scholarship? In this book Peter Enns, an expert in biblical interpretation, addresses Old Testament phenomena that challenge traditional evangelical perspectives on Scripture. He then suggests a way forward, proposing an incarnational model of biblical inspiration that takes seriously both the divine and the human aspects of Scripture.

Decent reading of gently provocative scholar
Revisado: 09-30-23
Book is a bit all over the place in terms of addressing historical critical debates over historicity and "purity" of the Bible. Reasonable and reverent attempt to reframe the Christian understanding of inspiration, inerrancy, and incarnation. Narration is not colorful or engaging but fits book's tone and scope just fine. Worth a listen.
